I like my beard. I've been growing it out for about 6 weeks now. I find that beards and long hair may retain some moisture, but are definitely warmer in the winter.

I'm toying with growing mine this coming year, Mrs Pit is betting me I won't do it but we'll see !!!

BEARRRRDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Quite a few years back I had to shave my beard for a time. I went skiing the day after... OMG! I thought my jaw would freeze off! I have since had a beard nearly 25 years. KEEP the beard in winter.:)

I had a beard when I was in Alaska, everytime I came home from 3 months in the wild my wife made me shave before she would touch me.

Beard = No Sex :mad:

So until sex is no longer important to me I will be beardless...

Didn't Jeremiah Johnson shave his beard for his lady as well?

As far as the thread goes, for me, it's full beard all the time. I trim my mustache when I start eating it and I'll trip the beard down to an inch long once a year, but that's it for me.

beard definitly keeps you warmer, have spent weeks in the wilderness, with and without a beard to -20 below in damp wet conditions, beard gets iced up a bit but its much wamer than no beard.

I go between full beard and goatee, both trimmed to abut 1/2". I like both in the summer and the winter...but, I am in Florida. I also wear a Tusa Liberator mask while snorkeling and always have a good seal, with both a full beard and goatee.

I think in a dirty environment, clean shaven is best; but, when you have a chance to clean up regularly, a beard is fine.

Nay. Just because I am 20, and at that age.. they don't go well with the ladies. :o

I start one the end of Aug. and shave it off in Dec. I think it helps a great deal when it's cold especially if you're wearing a scarf or balaclavas.

Shaving sucks. Beards cut the wind in the winter.

I grew a mountain man beard during my year in Afghanistan, and that experience converted me - to not shaving. I grow a beard. I keep it quite a bit shorter and more professional-looking than I did over there, though.

I've had a beard for 22 years. It's not hot in the summer and does help insulate in the winter. The ice build up in more of a nusance then anything else. The moisture is not near your skin so it's not a problem.

Got ya beat, Scott - 43 years for me. Nowadays it ranges between these two lengths (these pictures were taken 1 day apart - I guess you can figure out which one came first ).

Hey Bear Claw, is that a beard, or did the last thing you ate stick to your face?? :D

Grabbed this off a blog-I knew there was something negative about beards & cold weather.

Beards should be shaved or clipped close. Hair should be combed daily and not allowed to grow too long. A beard or long hair adds very little in insulation value and soils clothing with the natural hair oils. In winter, a beard or a mustache is a nuisance since it serves as a base for the buildup of ice from moisture in the breath and will mask the presence of frostbite. All individuals should shave daily, when possible. Because shaving with a blade and soap removes the protective face oils, the individuals should shave, if possible several hours before exposing his face to the elements. This action will reduce the danger of frostbite. Shaving with an electric razor will not remove the protective oils. Under chemical or biological warfare conditions a beardless face and daily shaving are especially important, since an airtight seal of the protective mask is difficult to obtain with even stubble on the face.

What a pile of crap! If there was ever any doubt about whether a beard insulates (and protects from wind) your face in the winter, shave it off and see what it feels like the next day.

I'm MUCH older but if you're a single guy of any age, a full beard can reduce the pool of single women who will initially have an interest. I've had a beard at times but am not so fond of one that I'm presently willing to decrease the dating odds.
