Full sharpmaker setup vs. edgepro cost

How are you doing the jeweled edges? With the 1500 diamond coming in at different directions, and no stroping after? Looks sweet.

Kidding. I just switch to a somewhat random circular motion when I get to the super fine stones. I do still strop a little to finish off the bur, but not with very heavy compounds.

Well I am pretty much sold on a kme system. I am going to ask for a sharpmaker from my wife for Christmas and then get a kme when I get my work bonus in February! I figure I can learn some fundamentals with the sharpmaker and use it for touch ups later down the road. It is also a lot easier to justify wanting a sharpener to the wife when it is $50 as opposed to $200+.

Thanks for your help bflying, you have been a huge help. Also a big thanks to scamero TravisH and everyone else who kindly contributed to my thread! I will keep asking my questions in this thread if that is okay, even though it has really strayed from my original question.

Sharpmaker with CBN rods is all the average person will EVER need
even for normal reprofiling. .

Excellent choice sir. Be sure to get the diamond or cbn stones for the sharpmaker as soon as you can.

Sounds like a plan. You will do just fine with the process, because you are going in with your eyes open and asking questions ahead of time. Please do come back with any questions and let us know about some of your trials and successes. We are all here to learn and share some of our conquests.

Sharpening is one of those things where there are lots of "right" ways to do something, with many less "wrong" ways.

Skill, art, patience, technique, geometry, coordination, precision, etc.....and a whole lot of Bandaids. Enjoy!!

You're welcome!

Be sure to show her how to use the Sharpmaker. The SM with Medium rods is all I use for my kitchen knives. Less than a dozen passes brings them back to scary sharp. She'll get to liking the SM so much, she'll gladly let you have the KME and keep the SM as 'hers'. ;)

He didn't say she was going use the Sharpmaker. I don't think he is assuming she'll be interested in sharpening. I do like the strategy of gaining her acceptance of the dual purchases!

Haha you have this down to a science

+1 Makes a helluva difference to have the CBN rods on hand for somewhat heavier duty jobs. And WAY less frustrating, time consuming. I had my SM for 20 years before getting the CBN rods. It was the classic Italian face palm after I used them... once!
