Fun at the forge/anvil...

Rick- I went back and looked at the photos after reading your post. I can see what you mean! :o It had to have just been some weird contortions right as the camera snapped, because normally I stand as upright at the anvil as I can (or anywhere for that matter, LOL).

Sorry the radio is so loud in the background of this, I have no idea why--- it's louder in the video than it was in the shop at the time. But I'm out of boards for now, so I couldn't redo this even if I wanted to. LOL :)

Thanks folks :)

Great looking Nick. I loves to chop me some wood. It amazes adults and little childrenz alike.

Very cool video Nick.

This thread's a fun one to keep an eye on.

Damn. Nice Chopping, I hate to see what you can do with a handle on that blade!

Great vid Nick! I'm sure this Moss fella is really going to like this one!! Show us how that Big Oak turns out when you get a chance. :)

Thanks guys. :)

This one made for a lesson learned... I don't know how to do a machine/belt finish AND try to bring out a hamon to a "working polish." So it got taken out to a hand rubbed finish, but something new for me as it's fine enough to help bring out the hamon, but not a super crazy fine grit polish.

Another new thing for me, which I'm pretty excited about---- 5460 year old Bog Oak from the Ukraine for handle material. Feels like African Blackwood in weight, and works much like it as well--- loving it so far. :)

Great looking knife. I like the old Oak and cant wait to see it finished out. Like the video, no problem holding an edge there.

Great looking blade! I have some W2 from Don lying around, still haven't been able to use it. But you triggered me......

What grit did you end up going to on the blade. It looks real nice!

Cool Nick,
We been a bit out o touch too.
Glad you're still kickin.
Like to catch up. your number the same?
A.

That's some serious choppin there:thumbup:. That Hamon looks great. I like the way you can see the ashi and still have a finish on the blade like a user.

Thanks again guys :)

I am warming up to the blade finish, LOL. When you're so used to trying to squeeze every bit of activity out of a hamon, it's kind'a hard to "say when" on a blade that is intended to be used hard.

I hand sanded to a very clean 320X. Etched in really dilluted ferric (I don't even know what the ratio is anymore... probably like 9:1 ?). Sanded the oxides off with 800X paper. I did that a few times, and then a couple more etches followed by 1,000X powder abrasive mixed with 3'n'1 on a piece of flannel wrapped around my sanding block.

It looks about like a 400-500X -ish finish, but with a subtle, white hamon and some of the whispy activity showing as well. :)

I'm trying to coordinate my shop time with a buddy of mine so he can see how I will shape the handle....

haha Nick you and I are Channeling our Hamon experimentation! Nice to see you slumming it with us Peasants... :D

Can't wait to see how the handle shaping comes along on this one!

The finish on the blade is spot on in my opinion... Enough 'rough' left on it to not feel bad using it, but also a lovely hamon showing the heat-treat on this one as well!

Color me EXITED to finally get my hands on this!!
