Fun at the forge/anvil...

That is a beautiful anvil, and beautiful newfies as well. Is the support base for the anvil dry-stacked solid concrete bricks? Setting up my shop and have not cut a big stump yet, wondering if the brick absorb force the same, or maybe they are just a form to surround cement and mounting hardware. Thanks.

Yep, Ray got it. :) My anvil is a 450# Nimba Gladiator.

It's more anvil than you need for just knives, but I worked on a beat up old anvil for years. When it came time to upgrade, I had the money and REALLY wanted the Nimba. I like to dink around with ornamental blacksmith stuff every now and then, and the extra weight/mass is nice. :)

Matt- The base is actually made from glued and screwed 4X4's. A family friend is an aluminum boat builder, and he gets his sheets of aluminum on huge 24' long pallets. He let me have one, and it took over half of the pallet to make this base. I just painted it to match up better with the shop. :)

I had a few shots of the Bog Oak handle in process. I REALLY like this stuff. To be brutally honest, I was a little concerned it might just seem like a piece of red or white oak dyed black... but it doesn't at all. It's very dense, and there are actually some bronze and silver tones in the handle (I think Coop might be able to capture them, but I won't even try ;) LOL).

None of these show the handle completely done, the last shot is with it rubbed down with Tru-Oil. It won't have the soaking wet look when complete.

Thanks again for looking guys. :)

A thick, heavily contoured handle... Lots of ass in the handle to keep the monster blade from ratcheting out of your hand. :)

Completely hand sanded to 1200X and then rubbed down with Tru-Oil... awaiting cure and then final hand finishing. :)

Benchmark Handles for sure! I have a piece of the Bog Oak and look forward to finding the right piece for it. Thanks Nick

Apparently 5000+ year old Bog Oak dust is not something you want to breath in... Got word f/ Nick yesterday that it made him pretty sick but that he has 'recovered' and back onto the finishing stages and working on some leather for this beauty!! (Glad you're ok Nick!!)

I'm hopeful he didn't ingest some Alien DNA hidden for centuries...... ha. ;)

I had one on Roger... it just wasn't a good enough one. :foot: I've dealt with really bad allergies my whole life. However, ironic as it is, I very rarely have any issues in the knife shop! I am buying a new, better fitting respirator.

I got some of the dust from this handle in my sinuses and had a severe allergy attack that triggered a NASTY sinus infection and ear infection. It knocked me out of the shop completely for over 4 days. :grumpy: I haven't been this sick in years.

Of course this leads into the joke that the reason the Bog Oak is black is because it's full of the black plague... ;)

BUT!!! I don't want to deter anyone from using this wood! It's really nice to machine/shape/sand, and it's quite striking! I should have been more careful with respiratory protection, and I'm more sensitive to this kind of stuff than most guys in the first place. Most makers have at least one material they have to be extra careful with, like Cocobolo, Ironwood, Snakewood, etc... just turns out this is that material for me. :)

well if he did, it was likely prior to this, which would explain a lot.

Nick,

I called the other day. Now I know why I got your voicemail!

Glad to hear you are okay. The handle, as usual, rocks!

Hi Folks :)

Another update to this slow going thread...

Thought about not posting all the following, but hey, I have a paid membership here and at fototime, so what the heck. ;) (and if you'd rather not look that option is just a click away ;) :)).

A bunch of the snapshots are just showing some of the grip options a handle like this allows--- like grabbing the butt end for an extended reach.

Ironically, even with all these snapshots, I didn't capture what the Bog Oak REALLY looks like in hand at all. It is jet black, but has silver and bronze tones in certain light/positions. One of the coolest things about it, is the grain, color, and gloss that the butt end of the handle has.

Thanks for looking :)

The hamon in this blade is not done up the way I normally do them, but it is still very visible in hand.
