Fun Camping weekend in Michigan

I had a great camping trip this weekend and managed to meet up with a bunch of Michigan bushcrafter folks. On Sat. weekend, I was hanging with a Michigan milita group who were having a public day and shooting competition at Island Lake Recreation area and then on Sunday, I mosy’d down to Chelsea, MI where they had a small flint knapper’s show and then an Atlatl throwing competition.

I left Friday night and camped out at the Island Lake Recreation complex. I wanted to check this place out before hand because it is going to be the same site for a Michigan Bushcrafter’s meeting to be held at the end of May. It is a great site, with plenty of trails, great camp ground, lots of fatwood and I’m looking forward to the meeting.

Friday night was actually kind of cold for this time of year, dipping to just below freezing. A heavy frost was over everything in the morning. Then on Saturday the temperature warmed considerably into the mid-70's and Sat. night was almost too warm! I slept in my Hennessy Hammock, using an Etoweh 10' x 12' tarp as a cover. What a great size tarp for the Hammock. It provides complete coverage and plenty of storage space underneath you. The Hammock is under the tarp, you just can’t see it in the shot.

Fire on Friday night with the militia group. Notice everybody is rather wrapped up and soaking the warmth of that fire! The were reporters from CNN and Reuter’s there too who have been covering the Militia group. These guys are anything but controversial. Really a bunch of really great folks who are promoting the open carry law that Michigan has on the books. Apparently, open carry of hand guns is legal in the state. Part of the point of this public day at the recreation area is to have folks open carry firearms and reaffirm their rights to do so in a public place. The rangers in the park were all kept informed and the event went really well for them.

A couple of the militia guys were sleeping in U.S. Army bivvy's. Nice set-ups!

Saturday morning, still feeling the frost. I got to try out my new trianga stove set up. This is one of the 27-series systems with the bottom and top warmer, 0.6L kettle, two sauce pans and non-stick frying pan. This is a very slick set up!

After breakfast all the militia guys went off to their public demonstrations. I hung around camp for a bit and prepared a bunch of bowdrills kits as I was to do some friction fire demo's as part of the public display and information sharing event.

Things were just starting to role as I pulled in.

The little bushcrafting station that I was manning actually received a lot of attention. I must of have popped off about 5 coals and my arms were getting sore. Several attendee's were giving it a go with a few having success. Unfortunately, the wood that I prepared on site was a bit temperamental. I managed to get one coal out of it, but it was tough going. Fortunately, one of the coordinators brought a bunch of nicely conditioned cedar which made the demo's go much easier. I had a pile of jute twine but we used it all in the process having different folks blow the ember's into flames.

One of the young ones learning flint & steel. There were about 4 children around learning flint and steel and blowing tinder bundle's into flames. They had blast and for some reason, the parents decided to trust their children's eyebrows to my kid-management skills. Those kids just had such positive attitudes, it pretty much made my whole weekend just hanging out with them and showing them primitive fire.

I left the public show at about 2:30 pm and took a 3 h or so hike along the trails. The greenery is just starting to flourish right now.

I'm not sure what this dried up fruit was, it was off a tree. It was just a hollow husk when I found it.

This is the main blade I was using over the weekend. A Walter Davis custom. Great ergos, 3/16" thick yet very aggressive tapering on the flat grind to a nice thin edge. This knife grows on me the more I use it!

One of Bowguy's buddies, George who runs a survival training school in Ohio was demonstrating handrill. He was a great teacher and had a bunch of us tag teaming handrill. I managed to get my first handrill ember as part of a tag team. The lady who preceded me, holding the drill in the shot below, did all the work on it though. So in all fairness, I’m not going to call success on my new year’s resolution to get a hand drill yet...I’m getting close though! I can’t tell you what a pleasure it is to be able to hang around with people like Doc Canada or George who never hesitate to share their wealth of knowledge!

The dart is completely straight, but notice how it bows out at the end of the throw on the release.

The guy in the mohawk behind MIDV-LFB was an amazing thrower. He'd hit the 3d target almost every throw.

During one of the competition shots, I managed to get a photo of a dart just hitting the target. Look at that arrow flex right after impact. The shot after it was about 2 seconds after and what you normally see it.

Overall, it was a fantastic weekend. However, I'm bushed out! I have to admit, I’ve already enjoyed a hot bubble bath on my return! Maybe a few W&SS folks will be interesting in the Michigan Bushcraft meeting???

Looks like an awesome time in some beautiful scenery...until the bubble bath scene. :)

Looks like it was a lot of fun. Makes me want to get outdoors that much more.

Really, really good stuff, Ken... really good. Looks like you had a very interesting weekend.

I, on the other hand, imitated a vegetable. I sure would have traded you.

OHMYGODMYEYESWILLNEVERBETHESAME.

Say, you look different, somehow. Can't put my finger on it... maybe it's the hair.

man some great pics, great to see people supporting open carry, although a lot people are against seeing it in public, I think it's great, nothin like noodles and bacon outdoors!!!:thumbup:

Wow! Awesome pictures kdg...looks like you had a blast this weekend and with a great group of guys/gals:thumbup:

Glad to see the Hennessy work out well for you. I used an Equinox 10x12 foot siltarp this past week on a backpacking trip with my son and agree it's about the best size to give you enough coverage for your hammock and gear, plust enough room to cook under:thumbup:

I would have loved attending that flint knapping demo...that's a great skill!
