I just spent three days at the Eugene knife show. I got to meet a lot of really cool really nice people (I don't want to list them all for fear of forgetting someone). It was totally cool to meet people that I had only emailed with.

Along with the good comes the bad...personally witnessed a shady incident. After this show I really know who is the good, the bad and the ugly.

Tell us the shady incident then

Ferret,

I would hate to be slapped with a defamation lawsuit (or whatever the snake term is

) for stating publicly what I saw. I'll email you offline.

Except this one thing, I found everyone to be overwhelmingly friendly. I took a whole lot of pics, which I'll put on a page later.

Please, E-mail me also Mitch? I wish I could have gone to that show! Well, I guess Atlanta is going to have to do for me, and I can't wait...

I had a great time at the Oregon Show myself too, Mitch! I was there just on Saturday, but I bought knives from Ed Fowler - ever the informative and engaging gentleman, Audre Draper - THE First Lady Master Bladesmith of the ABS, Tom Mayo out in Hawaii, and Mastersmith Charles Ochs, with whom my sons and myself had lunch after buying from him a nice little hunter. What a weekend. I did miss Al Barton and Dave Murphy though...

I have recieved many emails about this "shady" incident.

What happend was a gross case of mistaken identity that involved a number of custom knives. The person who mistakenly got these knives refused to give them to the person who they were intended for. I emailed the person who was wronged to verify what I saw happend. He wishes for this situation to be put in the past and does not wish for this situation to turn into a large BFC drama/flamewar etc. He wishes that the person who did wrong would grow from the experience. I am very impressed by how he handled the situation - he is a man of great maturity and integrity.

I'm sorry I can't be more explicit about the situation.

Kwaiken56,

You can blame MY not showing-up at the Eugene knife-show on UW Mitch.

HA! Okay Dann, you're off the hook. Yeah, I don't like to be on the road for very long either these days. Maybe we both ought to look into copters!

It was way worth the drive though.

Sorry to hear what transpired. I never heard anything about it at the show.

I was going to email people what I saw offline. I drafted up a response but first sent it to the person who was wronged, to make sure I had my story straight before I sent out the email. He responded that he didn't want the situation brought out, and he emphasized that it would cause unessiary problems on the forum. I apologize for dropping the tease.

Dann,

Sorry, I hitched a ride from Chuck Bybee. Maybe next year if I have a car or something.

Kawanin,
It was great getting to meet yet another forumite.

Rick,
I'm really sorry for the tease. Maybe if you come out to Seattle I'll tell you the story.

Everyone,
I don't really see why the focus is on this one incident. I guess I'd rather focus on the good. I could just as easily go back and edit out what I said above, but I don't think that's right. How about we focus on the really high points in my trip, like getting to hang out with Mayo, getting to eat with many great makers, getting the last Talonite Pikuni, and going over to Wayne Goddard's house.

This trip was better than I could have imagined. Words cannot describe how memorable this trip will be.

And that's that. It was a great show. Thanks for the great pics Mitch. It was like walking the isles all over again.

I also saw the unethical behavior at the Eugene show. It was the first unethical deal I had ever witnessed and I was mad. Mad enough to want to publicize the incident to anyone who would listen. However the person who was wronged wants the deal to be forgotten and hopes the person wronged him will learn. If a similar situation happens to me I hope I can be this big.

I'm going to mention some of the great people my family and I met and talked at the show.

Mitch Lum: You are welcome at my house, behind my table (dinner or knife show) or with our family anytime. If you want to go to Montana with us let me know. Mitch also helped me get a new Ken Onion Mid-Tech Boa.

Larry and Vince from BladeArt: Our table was next to BladeArt so we got to know them. These are ethical and honorable men who I will do business with. I'm placing an order with them tonight.

Wayne and Phyllis Goddard: Very gracious and friendly people. My wife was very amused that I was speechless when Wayne was talking.

Ken Onion: He walked up to me, stuck a knife in my hand and walked away. When I said "Wait let me give you some money" he said "Pay me later". When I did catch up to him later he said "You know you can turn around and sell that knife and make some money." Don't ask because it is not for sale.

Tom Mayo: Tom is a great person and friend. I wish we could have spent more time with him. The pictures of the TNT's are good but they do not compare with the knives. I bought a large and my daughter bought a mini. I think the mini is my favorite.

Rob Simonich: What a guy. Rob is one of the funniest people I have ever met. He makes great knives too.

Aaron Frederick: Aaron won Best Folder. I met Aaron for the first time and my daughter bought a folder from him. He makes incredible knives and is a Southern Gentleman.

Ed Caffrey: Ed also won an award at the show but I can't remember which one. I talked to Ed at the beginning of the show and said I was interested in the second folder he made (warncliff 52100 blade, black G10 scales, titanium liners) but would have to wait until I had a little more money. On Saturday Ed stopped by the table and dropped off the knife. He said someone was checking it out and we could settle up at the end of the show. You need to check Ed's folders.

well mitch was already my friend from before, but I got to meet Chuck and his family and they are #1 in my book... obviously his wife is a very good cook..
smile.gif

All three of them were GREAT....along with their two adopted sons....
Mitch really helped out coming over often enough so I could go for a walk and take a wiz.....I had talked with Rob Simonich on the phone a lot and already knew he was a great guy....but hes a lot like my folders.. much better in person.....he even brought an extra 45 so I could have one!!!! What a guy. I could go on and on...but that would be violating my "keep it short" rule... so I will end here.......too bad I live so far from all these people!

The Good Guy in this tale of shame has requested that this post not go on any longer, so let's please honor his wishes. Karma will deal with the Bad Guy; what goes around comes around. Such is life.

Hey Mr. Mayo,

I know Chin. Does he sell your fine knives too? I only saw a single fine folder at Young Guns about 3 weeks ago. Gotta showcase the work you do.
