Funny things non knife people say.

It is only a little silly when a group of people cannot open a food bag because no no one has a knife, but it is a real tragedy when a person is injured because no one can cut a jammed seat belt or handle a similar emergency. The Knife Rights organization has a collection of stories that show lives being saved because a sharp, useful tool was available. In at least one case, a chld was burned to death after an auto accident because no one had a knife to cut a seat belt. The Knife Rights website makes interesting reading.

Related story: A soldier of mine was seriously wounded by a 10k pound truck bomb that hit an Iraqi police station. My guys rendered first aid but found that, once he was on a stretcher, they oculd not get the stretcher in the back of the HMMWV because, as the up-armored model (M1114) it had very thick reinforced webbing that stopped the heavy door from swinging open to 90 degrees. One of my soldiers had a Cold Steel SRK on his vest and was able to cut the webbing relatively quickly. The wounded soldier survived transport to the aid station at least in part because they didn't waste valuable minutes cutting the webbing.

So the funny thing NKP say to me is "why do you carry that big thing around?" or something about a Rambo complex (referring to a fixed blade knife on my kit). These are active duty military types! I usually say it is for taking scalps or something, but if the mood strikes me, I tell the the above story. You can dawdle around to find something to open your MREs, but when moments count, it is best for you and everyone around you to have the right tool at hand.

I've have actually responded to people who figure out I carry a knife and decide to make a rude comment about it with something similar to Stiletto in how it can be a life saving tool. Though in my case I have never had to do so, but in general we can use a knife to flatten a cars tires so they don't pop and are deflated at a steady pace to help prevent further spinal injury if there are occupants still inside a vehicle in a motor vehicle accident, as well as to help stabilize it and make it safer to work around. Cut airbags, seat belts and whatever else that we need to in case they are stuck, still deployed, or otherwise interfering in rescue operations. Cutting clothing to expose wounds so we can better treat them. And the list goes on and that is just for motor vehicle accidents.

Usually by that point they get the idea that a knife is a tool in my hands and potentially a life saving tool and are comfortable with it so I don't hear any other comments about it again except a "Oh, ok I never thought of that before." type of comment.

And from these people I get a "Why do you carry a knife? We don't need such dangerous things in society today!", "That's dangerous!", "Why do you carry a weapon?". And this is usually from people who see a small pocket clip on me, or on one occasion when I asked an Attorney who was teaching a law class what the specific knife laws were besides "X" (ones I listed off) as I carried a knife all the time and wanted to make sure I was 110% in the clear and knew my laws. Turns out I knew more than him and he had nothing to add on the subject. Sadly though in a class that was made for future law enforcement officers we had a few people who had comments such as the above, funny how they are perfectly find with firearms, tasers, batons (and talks about using lethal force) but mention a knife being used as a tool and carried on a daily basis too turns out to be the ingredients for all hell to broke loose from a few people. All of them I won over with pretty much the above example and a few others, except for one person who I think would ban all knives and scissors and make us use nothing but safety scissors and those plastic knives you get at fast food restaurants if she had her way.

I was sadly mistaken that day for bringing up knife laws in that class, I figured they would have been fine with that considering everything else that was discussed in there. It was probably the most non-violent thing discussed in there from what I recall. Never happened in a fire science though, I guess with us being expected to use chainsaws, axes, sledgehammers, jaws of life, etc a small piece of sharpened metal you call a knife that you cut things with seems quite a bit less intimidating in comparison. Heck I even discussed how we never had a problem like that in the fire science program with someone before as it's pretty common to see pocket clips for knives but no one makes any fuss out of it, and no one ever shows it off or uses it unless they need to and are pretty discrete about it. He was at the same conclusion as me, a knife is another tool it's part of our gear.

I don't know whether to find it funny or offensive but it happened to me. Today I got kicked out of the hardware store by a storekeeper (not the manager but one of the clerks) who said I wasn't allowed to carry my knife in the store because it's longer than six inches. And then she pointed to the door and told me to get out because my knife wasn't even legal. I just about told her to call the police and see what they had to say on the matter.

Kicking customers out of the store is not good for the bottom line.

Pissing customers off is not good for the bottom line.

Go back, knife and all, and have a word with the manager.

I told the clerk I wanted to speak to the manager, the manager's out of town. However I intend to go back with a highlighted copy of state law showing that she's wrong, and politely explaining that I'd like to resolve this episode in a courteous manner to there are no serious repercussions like someone losing their job of being reprimanded for pissing off the bottom line.

Alright here's a funny one that you probably won't be able to top easily. I've been carrying my BK9 for over two months now and I've had to use it on a lot of things on the job. Today I'm helping my mother with the neighbor's garden and to get there it's necessary to walk under some low hanging tree branches, something I'm sick and tired of so I'm going to hack them down. And on the way over apparently my mother gets the same idea and she asked in all seriousness "Does that knife work well?" Keep in mind this is the same knife that I've stated has cut down entire trees on the job.

In the last week my mother has twice asked to borrow one of my knives to open packages. ;) This is the same woman who prior to this has always questioned why I carry knives around in the house. Maybe she is finally getting a clue. Hhmmm. Maybe I know what she's going to get for Christmas this year. :D:D

Today, at the covered dish at church for "Pastor Appreciation Day", one of the ladies, in a kitchen with many very dull knives in multiple drawers, asked if anyone had a sharp knife and 6 knives popped out of pockets and sheaths within 5 seconds. Two were from women.

Just realized this is post # 300. :D

Every time I start to read this thread I remember all the times that people have said these things to me and I get so irrationally angry that I just want to hunt down and systematically stabbing each and every one of them... Then again its saying things like that to people that makes them look at me with that "hes-such-an-evil-barbarrian !" look, well I should leave now...

(Imho)
Comments like this do little to improve the way sheeple view knives. If you carry a knife your an ambassador for our community, same as if you ride your motorcycle like an idiot your just giving people justifications for restricting your hobby.

Yeah, if comments like this invoke your need to stab people, I think there may be more an issue there and knife carrying is not the major one. Really? You care that much what they think? Trench coat mafia?

Leave your knife in the vehicle, but swing by and grab a large kitchen knife or machete in the store to carry or have in the cart.
This will help point out the stupidity while speaking with the store owner.

They sell Tools! as in a Knife is a Tool!

For you information I actually don't care what other people Think but it does bother me when people call all my knives "weapons" when there is only two that I would use against another human being (My AK-47 bayonet and my CRKT M-16) the rest are purely tools.I hate(I don't use this word lightly) the societal stereotype of switchblade wielding thugs and machete-clad murderers when most knife collectors are your every-day guys that are just looking for a versatile tool(s) to serve them when they need it most. Yes there is your occasional delinquent that boasts a wal-mart folder but that shouldn't be the mental image that the greater population gets when they see a person that carries a blade. finally to conclude this mini-rant I will say that my earlier comment was a joke pure and simple and I would never use a blade (except for the aforementioned two and even then only in a defensive role) against a human being.

One day I had to drive down to the local federal building with my boss. Knowing they have metal detectors there, I pulled my sebbie out of my pocket and started putting it in the glove box. My boss, upon seeing this ,kind of just stared at the knife. Sensing his nervousness, I blurted out "My fruit knife". He stared at me and asked "What the hell kind of fruit do you eat?".

Priceless!

I'm not sure if this was said yet but one of my favorites is..."Can I use your bottle opener?", "Can you open this wine bottle", etc...

I had somebody comment on my Sage 1, "Whoa, that's like Crocadile Dundee." I just said "Huh? Oh yeah, haha." Then we just went on about our business.

I had used it to open up a taped box after he had fumbled with it trying to grip the tape and pull. Hopefully a light went off in his head that a knife is pretty useful.

I had a pretty funny one today. While on the job I needed to get down into a water meter pit to loosen the supply line so an underground sprinkler system can be installed, but I didn't want to climb down inside the pit so I leaned in and needed one of the guys to hole my legs to keep me from falling on my head. So while I'm dangling the guy sees my BK9 and asks if it's a saw, I tell him it's a knife. He asks the obvious question of course. "Why would anybody need a knife like that?" To which I eloquently respond, while still in the pit, "Have you ever seen the amount of foliage people will let grow and surround their air conditioner units?" Their response was a simple "Oh" and that was the end of that conversation, then it was right back to asking for tools to be handed down to get the job done.

I work in IT. A couple weeks ago i was at our data center with our network admin, a former Marine, to rack and set up a new server. The box is taped up and he goes "do you have your keys with you mine are in my jacket" (on the floor). I take my orange kabar mini dozier out of my pocket, use two hands to open it and open up the box. He says something about our companies "no weapons policy", not really in an accusatory manner, i know he doesnt really care, but not really joking either. But then goes on to talk about how he left his handgun at home because he had to go to the airport (not being sarcastic either). As if my 2 inch knife is a weapon in the same class as a gun lol. I just was like uh huh...
