G10 Chopsticks

Well, sent Phillip an email. Granted, I sent it at around 2:35 AM on a Sunday, so I don't think I'll get a response till some time on Monday. I do wonder if he can make the chopsticks in another color, but light jade green is fine too.

I wonder what I can use to carry them around. I love that I can repurpose the Benchmade pouches for my glasses, but 9 and a bit inches won't fit in a BM pouch.

o.O The lamest thought just came into my head. Thigh strapped kydex chopstick holster. Wow... these forums inspire some odd thoughts...

My Ti chopsticks came in a leather case with a snapped flap and stitching down the middle to keep the sticks from rubbing against each other. Easy enough for a sheathmaker to put together.

Well, if "stabbing" food is a major concern, I imagine this would work too:

:D

Let's see you eat peas with chopsticks !
I learned to use chopsticks at a very early age in NYC Chinatown .Yes they were Chinese not Japanese type !
If you are new to chopsticks then search 'chopsticks' to find the proper use and table manners .

I wonder what the the tensile strength of G10 is.

G-10/Garolite is pretty stout stuff, I've made fighting sticks form 5/8" rod that we have yet to break. I've seen seen it listed at 38,000 psi on some charts. Here's some chopstick I made from small G-10 rod.

After reading this I bought a sheet of jade green g10 from http://www.usaknifemaker.com/ to make some. It was the cheapest g10 I could find, g10 is apparently pretty expensive...

arrived today, didn't plan on making them immediately but I couldn't resist and had nothing else to do for 6 hours.

tried a hacksaw, terrible idea. it worked but it took way, way, way to long.
P1030492.jpg

with a filtered dust mask, splash goggles and ear muffs, I moved on to a dremel
P1030496.jpg

stopped short of the full set, arms got tired and didn't want to spend that much time on it.

I don't have a shot of them in process, but these were ground to shape on a craftsman 4x36" belt sander in the vertical position. the shape was roughed out on the rollers and the taper was made by pointing the chopstick point down and pushing it into the flat platen and rolling it in my fingers. kind of ghetto, but worked really well.

final product, 4 sizes: 6.5", 8", 9", and 10.5". You cant see it even in the full 10mp image because they are slightly translucent, but it goes from round at the tip until the midway point, then becomes square with rounded edges.

mini 6.5" pocketable ones

8", perfect size for my hand. I'm glad i made the 3 sizes, cause both above and below just don't feel quite right.

10.5" for cooking.

the 6.5 and 8" sets fit perfectly covered in the ccw pocket of my maxpedition remora.

If I had the money I probably would have gone with the ones posted above, but I'm trying to squeeze every penny out my toy fund right now. After shipping the g10 sheet cost me about 25$, with 6 hours of work I got a set of 4 sizes in a thickness that matches what feels right in my hand. I still have enough to make another set, or to use for handles since whats left is still wide enough for most small knives.

I've wanted a set like this for seriously like 5 years, don't know why it took me so long to get around to doing this...

Outstanding:thumbup:

I love to read about people doing what they want. Funny how it takes us so long, right?

Great something else i dont need but want ! Guess il be goin to chinatown tonight .

I made some tonight from oak, made 9inch ones, and they work perfectly. My mother tryed to use some free ones to eat peas and noodles, but was having trouble. She said "you cant eat peas with them" so I replied, "oh yea? watch this" as I stuck mine down into the bowl and started pulling them out 1 after another. I could tell the difference between mine and the free ones immediatly.

I don't get to have sushi as often as I'd like, but I love my chopsticks.

Mom got these for me for christmas.

Solid Ti, and perfectly balanced. For everything from Cheetos to fine dining, I love 'em:thumbup:

Proud2Deviate--where'd you get those Ti chopsticks? (Or did your mom not tell you?) :)

Here's some chopstick humor:

My friend and I were eating at a Chinese restaurant.
When an elderly waiter set chopsticks at our places,
she made a point of reaching into her purse and pulling
out her own pair. "As an environmentalist," she declared,
"I do not approve of destroying bamboo forests for
throw away utensils."

The waiter inspected her chopsticks. "Very beautiful,"
he said politely. "Ivory."

I have two pairs on my way from Phillip, definitely looking forward to them! :)

2 sets I made for two of my freinds (they asked when they saw the pictures) along with some experimental pouches.
the one with the x makura is mine, the ones with the polish and simple saddle makura are theirs. The pouches are made
out of a cut off maxpedition remora strap, so it's somewhat water resistant.

When I started reading this thread, I was going to mention that they can be built with just a few tools. I did some last year out of olive wood, using a table saw and a 4x36 sander. They turned out well, but warped some.

If looking for materials, you might try pen blanks. The olive wood I used was a pen blank that was like 1"x1"x10" or so, and didn't cost that much.

finally got around to making a few sets for friends as gifts (yes, 2 years later o_o ) and made a black and orange set to see how they'd turn out. I wish I had thicker blue sheets to use, but in the end I think I still like the jade best.

It's hard to stay uniform with a sloppy 4x36" belt sander, but I tried to keep a range of +/- .010" at both ends, and keep the center line of the taper in the same place.
