G10 G10 G10 wheres the micarta

I like Micarta but prefer G10 for it's inert property and resistance to many things we encounter while using a knife.

The biggest things for me is that Micarta looks best buffed which means smooth, as mentioned earlier in this thread, and when you have buffed and contoured scales with Micarta, you can introduce small pits and rugosities where the contour grinds into and past layers of canvas. This not only looks less appealing to me but it is also not impervious 100%. I guess you could call this a retro look too :)

On the flip side, rough Micarta exposes threads which will darken from moisture and oils from outside sources or your hands. Thirdly, G10 can be textured and still retain it's primary color. I believe G10 has a higher heat resistance too but I could be completley wrong in this assumption. My personal opinion is that G10 looks much better when textured for a really good, non-slip grip and it yeilds a really nice buffed and smoothed out finish too.

... how is micarta different in those ways?

The pattern in some flat pieces of g10 I've seen on knife handles almost looks saw-cut...like they started with a thick piece, sawed it into thin pieces, and the texture is from the teeth. It may be that the texture is on the material when the knife manufacturers receive it, and they just don't choose to sand it off. Not in all cases, but perhaps in some. In terms of not dulling the holy hell out of your tools, micarta is SIGNIFICANTLY more machinable than g10. The latter seriously reduces the cutting life of my checkering files, not to mention doing horrific things to router bits.
