I got these two knives at a garage sale a while back for $1. An Old Hickory kitchen knife and a Schrade NY deerslayer.

I haven’t really touched the Schrade, but we’ve been using the old hickory in the kitchen quite a bit. I was surprised at how nice of a knife it is. It gets really sharp, really easily and the thin blade cuts great. The handle is separating a little bit and I’m worried that moisture and other junk might get in there and rust the blade.

My wife got me some micarta for Christmas, so I’m planning to put new handles on it. Once I have time to get going on the project I’ll post some more pictures.

You cannot lose that one if you use those bright colors for a handle.

I can't wait to see the results. Sounds like a fun project. Are you going to use pins and epoxy? Stamp/cut "OLD HICKORY" back into the handle? Good luck!

Yes, my plan is to use pins and epoxy. I haven’t decided yet on what material I’ll use for the pins. I probably won’t put the “Old Hickory” back on the handle. I don’t think I have those skills. :D

Personally, I wouldn't re-handle the Old Hickory, just tighten up the scales by tapping down the rivets. I have several Old Hickory kitchen knives with slight openings between tang and scales. No problems as long as you keep them clean.

Use corby bolts or Loveless bolts instead of pins. Loveless bolts are easy to do, corby's a little tougher. Much better in a kitchen environment then pins. You already have rust and corrosion under that handle. Old kitchen knife I rehandled a while back for a customer:

I think it may me too late for that. There is already junk down in the handles and I’m not sure how to remove it. I assume as this gets wet and swells, it pushes on the handles. At this point the pins are recessed in the wood, so I’m not sure tapping them would help either. It’s a cheap knife that’s not rare, so I figured the re-handle would be a fun project.

Wow. I’m kind of thinking that’s what the inside of my handle might look like. I figured I’d pull it off to try to stop the rust.

Thanks for the advise. I’ll look into the loveless bolts. I assume with the loveless bolts you would still epoxy on the handles?

Ya bet anytime. Yep, still use the epoxy and just tighten the bolts, no need to clamp your handle material. Gflex is probably the best knife making epoxy. Feel free to contact me anytime if questions arise and that holds true to anyone here on the porch doing a similar project.

Nice finds, good luck on the rehandling. Those old hickory knives are pretty great, and that one has lots of life in it still.

I've got an old hickory just like that, primo knife at a primo price. I use mine all the time... Really gets down into a peanut butter jar. I look forward to seeing how you make out.

My kids helped my wife pick out the micarta and they got me a couple different patterns. When I saw the Mexican blanket, I immediately thought it would go well on the old hickory. Hopefully I can figure out what I’m doing and not mess it up.
This will make that old hickory with that mexican blanket micarta all that much more special! Been wanting to get some of that stuff myself. Can't wait to see it all done.
