Garage sale score and re-handle

Ya bet anytime. Yep, still use the epoxy and just tighten the bolts, no need to clamp your handle material. Gflex is probably the best knife making epoxy. Feel free to contact me anytime if questions arise and that holds true to anyone here on the porch doing a similar project.
Sounds good. I hope you don’t regret that offer by the time I’m done with his project. With an actual knife maker watching, I’ll probably be embarrassed to show my results. :D

This will make that old hickory with that mexican blanket micarta all that much more special! Been wanting to get some of that stuff myself. Can't wait to see it all done.
For sure. They are already looking forward to seeing the end result. My 7 year old son is my toughest critic on the few knives I’ve worked on already. I’m pretty used to hearing “Dad, I can feel the pins.”

Wait, a dollar each or for both together?
It was $1 for both. $1 each would have been way too expensive. ;)

It was actually kind of funny, I picked up the Old Hickory and asked the guy how much and he told me to just take it for free. I felt bad just taking it, so I grabbed the Schrade and asked what I could give him for both and he told me $1. He had an old Hickory cleaver that was pretty cool, also, but I didn’t want to get greedy, so I left it for someone else.

I picked up an old wooden handled de horner at a yardsale once, for $3. I walked over to the table where the guy was sitting collecting the $ and handed it to him. He had his head down and said: "That'll be $3, do you even know what this is?" and then he looked up and said "Yeah you know what this is.", and took my $3

I made a little progress tonight. I popped the handles off and drilled out the rivets.

Based on the pile of fish scales that came out from between the handles, I can tell what the previous owner did with the knife.

The wood wasn’t too rotten, but there was definitely rust under there.

I was a little surprised there were three different sized holes on the knife, but maybe that’s normal. I haven’t done this enough to know. Next step - clean off the rust under the handles.

Looking foward to see how this project turns out. And that Mexican blanket micarta looks cool. I also have a similar knife that I wanted to change the handle on.

Looking good! On the next one turn the knife over before clamping . I always have the blade spine orientated towards me. Makes me feel better and even though its clamped, stuff sometimes does happen.

Makes sense. Thanks for the tip. So many little things to think about.

Definitely , I was doing one once and had the drill bit catch and spin the knife around.
Luckily I was wearing gloves and the blade was just a little paring knife I was able to avoid.

Definitely an excellent knife at an excellent price.
I was just given one of their 8" slicers a few days back, but all I had to do was wash it and sharpen it.
If it ever needs it I'll just reuse the original handles, but some Walnut wouldn't look too bad.

Looks wild! That looks like it’ll turn out great. Gonna leave the blade patina or clean that up also and give it a hand rubbed finish?

Thanks. It has some potential, just depends on my novice skills. I’m leaving the blade as-is. I like the patina.

Looking really good. Here's another tip, to get that tang scratch less, and thats something a lot of makers struggle with. I know, a lot of knife makers and or new owners send me their custom handmade knives to have sheaths made and this is a very common problem but is so easy to do well once ya get this little tip. Sand your tang at 90 degrees to each grit. Follows like this: I do 120 grit vertically across the tang, I then do 220 grit horizontally along the tang, then 320 vertically, then 400 horizontally along the tang and finally 600 also horizontally along the tang. Follow this protocol about switching directions and ya'll be left with a smooth scratch less tang. i do this on the grinder. If you are doing this by hand make sure to wrap your paper around a firm either wooden or steel sanding block of some type or you can leave the tang proud fo the handle material.

Horsewright Horsewright - thanks for the tips. Hopefully I can put the tang sanding technique to use this weekend. It’s great having skilled people willing to share their knowledge with guys like me that are trying to learn.

Good deal, ya bet. That changing grits at 90 degrees really makes it easy cause ya can see all the scratches ya thought ya got but didn't! Yeah we've been busy branding our ownselves. That bay colt my son is on had never been outside before. He had maybe five rides on him.
