Gardening/yardwork what traditional do you carry?

This old Case and a leatherman Squirt P4 to pull the weed eater line out, as mine has short individual pieces that must be extracted as they become too short.

Hm... I don´t have a garden to work in... But I like working outdoors on my (own) building lot and making firewood... I use to carry a Mora in Carbon steel... I should find it somewhere and take a pic. I hope I haven´t lost it

Kind regards
Andi

My hardworking yard knife of late has been the AG Russell Cowboy. It's synthetic yellow scales make it impervious to hot and muggy conditions and it's color makes it easy to spot when I set it down. And that stainless blade can take the very humid conditions we've had here in Minnesota this summer.

This was my recommendation as well. The knife is inexpensive, stainless and tough. I have the large black rucarta.

Mine has spent hours underwater, then in the wet pocket all day in the summer. No rust. I took it swimming in the lake last week.

I work in our garden a good bit. Most days I just tote my peanut to open sacks of mulch and soil, cut twine, etc. Clippers or a folding saw do the heavy cutting.

Thats a pretty good testament right there.

This one was with me this weekend helping me mend the fence. I'm even able to open it with gloves on.

Most o f my yard work is mowing and trimming with some weed pulling....I occaisionally have some prunong to do but also own some specific tools for that so I usually carry a peanut or a zytel delica vg10 because it's hotter than a popcorn fart in Austin, and my shorts and shirt are usually soaked....last thing I need on my belt or in my pocket is any additional heft trying to pull the shorts and my belt further down! ...:-)

The one in my pocket. I don't have a specific one for yardwork. Which means it's usually a stockman.

I don't have a knife for gardening or lawn work. My wife does all the gardening and lawn work at our house. If she has something heavy, I will help her and I did mow the grass two weeks in a row when she had her knee surgery this past June (2012) but other than that I don't do gardening or yard work - hate it. She has some pruners but doesn't use any knives that I know of. She does use a surplus G.I. folding shovel and I gave her and a stick with a metal fork on it that I bought for her for snakes.

Kurec, that Wostenholm Stag Pruner is magnificent! You should show that in the Old Knives thread, go down a storm.:thumbup:

I'm a keen gardener, less so this year due to knee problems. My two favourites are Opinel in stainless, traditional rustic French work-knife. Having no spring or liners, there's nothing to get fouled up. Earth, grit sand etc the slipjoint's worst enemy, but it has a useful locking collar. Light in the bin (pocket) too! I do like to carry a CASE Medium Stockman in Chestnut Bone cv. The Sheepfoot&Pen blades are really useful for budding, cuttings or light pruning.

Started using a K55K as my yard knife and it performed admirably. It was, however, a bit of a pain to clean when full of dirt and grit. Ditto for the modern one-hand lockbacks that I tried next. My Case yella CV Soddie was the best cutter but a bit of a pain to dig out of the pockets in the heat. Then came the Svord; better, but still tough to get at sometimes. Gone to a small bootknife on a belt sheath now and access and cleaning are a snap. A large Douk-douk with a lanyard in the back pocket is a decent alternative too.

The only thing I prefer a serrated edge for is plant stems. Not too many traditionals with serrated edges, so I use a modern folder, although I have occasionally used my Opinel #9 Carbone.

Great stuff everyone. I think I am homing in on a SAK. It gives me a stainless setup. Can attach lanyard when in the yard for easy access. I am looking at the bushcrafter and the lumberjack. Really comes down to awl or screwdriver. Its going to be a hard choice. I can also double use this knife for hiking. If it does not work out in the garden atleast I will still have a use for it. And then can look into some of these other great suggestions :)
