Gareth Bull Shamwari Folder

One of these is now on the short - short list, very very nice pieces

Thanks gents :)

Aidansdaddy17 - steel is a very subjective thing, depends on your most likely uses for the knife, sharpening ability etc. My favourite however is RWL-34, it's an amazingly balanced steel offering amazing toughness, stain resistance and edge holding ability. Truth be told I designed this knife with RWL-34 and titanium in mind. My confidence in the steel allows me to grind the edges that bit thinner to up cutting performance without worrying it'll chip or break.

N77 is however awesome :D Made by Erasteel and now discontinued, I managed to snag a bar from a well known maker Des Horn. It is amazingly hard, we're talking 65Hrc if it's done right, super stain resistant and it has an amazing structure that results in a crazy sharp blade. Couple problems with it, it's difficult and expensive to make, thus Erasteel dropping it. It's also difficult and time consuming to harden. I believe it takes 5 cryo soaks and 5 tempering cycles to get the results Des has been getting out of it.

Thanks for the quick response. What allows this folder to open so smoothly? Rides on glass! I think I am in. Is there a wait list and prices? Or an ordering process? Maybe I missed it somewhere. Love the frame lock also the liner lock with spacer option. Hmm

Honestly - tight tolerances. Keep everything parallel and perpendicular and it'll glide out every time, you should see the ones with bearings :D Mailed you back.

I honestly can't wait for mine to arrive. Been loving Gareth's designs since the moment I saw them :D

Anticipating this more than anything!

Yep. When I first joined blade I saw the old thread with the Warlock and all the praise for Gareth. With all of us starting cheap then buying more expensive knives it ends up full circle. Just in time for this new design. Ironic? Or fate? Ha

Great turn out on the pics and comparisons. Thanks to everyone who posted. I feel a lot more informed about the actual sizes since I have not actually seen them. Gareths design and attention to detail is phenomenal! Thanks again!

Ya gorgeous! I'm sold. What steel would be best? What is N-77?

Gareth mentioned a few things of Nitrobe 77. You should google it and also in youtube. Des Horn shows how flexible the steel is and the bonus. It is completely stain resistant.

Imagine H-1 on steroids. H-1 has 0.1 Nitrogen. Nitrobe 77....0.9. With les retained carbon then H-1 and added Molibdinum (spellcheck?) for toughness. It is a powdered technology steel.

I do need to get me some Nitrobe 77!

Gareth any word on when the shawari's with the inlays will be done? really intrigued by the fossil inlays and I'm curious to see what it looks like completed.

They're a ways off bud. Between orders it's already going to be a stretch to get the "basic" ones out. The release order will be:

Working grade framelocks
Ultralights
THEN the dressed up models.

I'm keen to see them too! I might have to do a vote to see which exotics go in first :)

oh I figured you have been busy but it was worth a try :D

one of these days you should just set up a video camera and tape the days worth of work. It would be interesting to see the man himself work

Yes! I agree wolf. Maybe Gazza will do a WIP....an at your pace one of my liner lock that he let me give just a tiny bit if input on. Gareth was a friend also in a way emailing me and talking shop about many things. Showing me some great CAD design of ideas I suggested, while my mom had been ill. Not sure I've ever heard of a maker doing that. Cannot wait to see some more work. Bringith onith zee Shamwari Gareth!

Sorry to derail this thread somewhat. But Gareth, are you still doing the Warlock fixed blade? I sent an email regarding trying to get one.

Hey Steel130

I am indeed working on a fixed version, the design's probably closer to the Shamwari in looks (I know I called it WarLock fixed inititally :D) As for the mail - Can you resend mate? Not ringing a bell but most likely me being scatter-brained!

For those wondering, here's the plan for the fixed version:

The dummy - I'm quite pleased how it feels in the hand.

Haha - Wolf and Aidansdaddy17, I seriously think it'd bore most to watch me work (but you'd likely learn new curses...). I might do a chopped up video with all the highlights in making a Shamwari though :D

I would be glad too. Thanks for the response. The mock up looks great already!
