Gaucho knives and cuchillos criollos of South America

kamagong kamagong to be frank, I think the mushrooming of my Scholberg's tang was a tad excessive. I wonder how the cutler was able to deform it so much without denting the handle (which, by the way, has no resin or wax whatsoever inside).
I've been wondering the same thing.....
In order to get a tang to that state it must have been way too long and white hot. That might be a bit tough to do and you'd almost certainly see some evidence on the endcap.
Another possibility is that blob is something applied as a fix at a later date, maybe an attempt to use some sort of solder to secure it? It almost looks like a bad weld rather than a peened tang end...

The "Martin Fierro" one looks rather crude as in no one bothered to give it even one tap with a ball peen hammer.
Not peened at all! That's a modern one, right? I wonder if it's the same cutlery cement as of old.
check this one out -- it looks like it was peened with Thor's hammer:
[Wow] (Icon is buried somewhere non-obvious.)
If you'd like I can post a picture of it next to a puñal for comparison.
Yeah!
(which, by the way, has no resin or wax whatsoever inside).
Another [wow]. is the handle extra thick-walled?

Could be... I always assumed it had to be the end of the tang because it looks the same color as the blade, but perhaps it's led solder.

If it's the same nickel silver sheet used for the scabbard, it's indeed thicker than some of the other knives I own. I've never taken it apart though, and it does have a small ding.

Gorgeous work throughout this thread..
There are several wonderful up and coming knife makers in the traditional "Gaucho region"- Argentina/south Brazil/Uruguay. I've worked with Rafael Trentin, hailing from the Rio Grande do Sul area of Brazil on three knives so far.
Number three is en route and will hopefully arrive this week. It'll be my first facón-type fixed blade.

Gorgeous wood ! Beautiful knife !
Please show your incoming knife when it arrives  and knife number one too since we are at it

Ow it would be cool to have a Yerba mate gourd and a matching knife in the same wood. If anyone has any please show them. Also, I always wondered, does the bombilla have some kind of filter or screen to prevent the mate leaves from going up the straw?

The straw has a screen.

Numbers one and two are very similar "mini-puukkos". He had a normal sized puukko up for sale here and I liked the design so much I asked if he could do a smaller one.
So I've got one in stainless (14c28n) and non (52100).

It really would be cool to have a matching knife and mate 🧉 set 😎
I have seen some very expensive sets online.

Yes, the bombillas have filters installed. There are variations of them.

My bombilla collection 😀
