gaw GAW ~ BE PREPARED ~ GAW gaw [ Delivered to Winner, SF FANATIC pg.4 ]

Outstanding scout knife and give away, Jim.:thumbsup: I'm happy to enter and would would be thrilled to have that one in my collection. Thanks for the opportunity.:)View attachment 1721589

Growing up in a small, (really small) town in west central Illinois there was little else to do but outdoor activities. I was a Cub Scout and Boy Scout in the 60's and 70's as were my 3 younger brothers. We were fortunate that a fantastic husband and wife duo moved to our town and started up a den and troop. In spite of everyone moving miles away, two of my brothers and I are still in constant touch with our former scoutmaster and have been able to get together with him and his den mother wife several times over the years. Sadly his wonderful wife passed 2-1/2 years ago.
I made it to Life Scout level, Order of The Arrow and worked one summer as an assistant camping councilor at scout camp. Never made it to Eagle level as our troop fell apart after our Scoutmaster got relocated and moved away for his job.
I've saved nothing from my childhood but great memories, one of my brothers has saved everything he possessed as a kid and still has his knife, uniform, handbook and various other items. A couple year ago I saw this Imperial scout knife with the blade etch from our area council in a knife dealers online store. I was happy to get it and gifted it to my
former scoutmaster shortly after his wife had passed away. View attachment 1721588

I wish to forward the knife to Old Hunter. He took scouting to a higher level than I. Once I got a drivers license and discovered girls and two wheel motorized vehicles, I was done. Old Hunter is a more worthy recipient.
I thank you jackknife - you humble me with your characterization. I do want to state emphatically that I'm not anymore worthy of this (or any honor) than any other porch member here. Sincerely, BB

I was a Scout from the late 60's, ending up as a Junior Assistant Scoutmaster back around 1978. Here's a patch that was only awarded 1 year (later versions were cloth) which we earned by taking canoes we built down the Colorado River.

I'm an Eage Scout, and spent a good number of years as a Scout leader.

I was always a little annoyed that I had to wait to get my Eagle until my older brother got his (did his project first, then mine)..

His Eagle Scout card was signed by Bush...mine was signed by Clinton....

In the Photobucket purge/Ransome I lost most of my scouting pics from when I was a scout leader.

Was able to find a few.

We used to take the scouts down this little waterway every year for an overnight canoe trip.

Stop to play and snack...and get sandy...

This spot is wide and shallow, with spots of "quick sand" where you will sink up to your waist immediately! We stop and play foot ball in the water every time.

Caught a catfish while we were stopped for camp (while the scouts were making dinner).

I did not plan on eating it (was going to toss it back in) but one of the boys insisted on cooking it.

Two trout from another over night on a little stream. It was the first overnight for a group of younger scouts...

I’m in for this one and I was a scout a very long time ago on the island of Ohau back in 1962-1965 my dad was stationed at Scoffield barracks

I remember we camped out one weekend, there were no worries about snakes as there are none on the island, But there’s poisonous centipedes and I remember seeing one that was at least a foot long crawling up the trail we were on, amazing creature and we didn’t disturb it, not sure if that one was poisonous or not but it was pretty creepy to watch!

Looks like you guys practice some terrific outdoor Scouting - good for you and your volunteer work with the boys. OH

I was a scout for less than a week—got in a fight with another scout (we already had some bad blood) and my folks decided to pull me out. Things got fine between me and the other guy, but I never joined back up.

I do have a student who is a long-time Scout and I’d be glad to pass a commemorative knife on to him if you think that’s an OK amendment to the giveaway entry requirements. But if not there are plenty of worthy folks already entered and I’ll just add my thanks for the very cool giveaway!

Here’s something a scout will appreciate as well. This is a bald eagle nest from a trail on the University of West Florida campus.

I was never in the Scouts (even though I do an annual BSA knife GAW in memory of my little brother), so I am ineligible. But I wanted to compliment you on a nice giveaway.

As it happens, 1/17 is my brother's birthday, so I usually try to put my giveaway right around this time. I like that this one is ending that day. I'll wait until you've finished this giveaway before kicking off mine. That way anyone who wants another shot at a (much less collectable) BSA knife will have a second chance :)

I would love to enter, thanks for the opportunity. I don’t have many regrets in life but one I do is not staying in Scouts and trying to earn Eagle Scout. Like many, once high school hit, there were other distractions. My good friend I grew up with has the same regret. We talk about it often, not the regret part, but how much fun we had. Several years ago I drove back to Wisconsin and brought back some of my things that had been stored in the attic. I never had an actual Boy Scout knife back then but did carry my Cub Scout knife and then an Uncle Henry 127.

Disposable income wasn’t in our family’s vocabulary, so we had to improvise. Mom made my brother and I each a day pack to use for short hikes. Would you believe I used it for an overnighter? I used one of Dad’s belts and rolled a sleeping bag around it and carried it around my waist. This pack held clothes, mess kit, some food and a few other items that were needed. Simpler times for sure.

Growing up in rural cow town Ohio, scouts had a pretty good representation. My dad became a scout master and I swear we had a lot more scout activities than I've seen from other troops. I remember having 3-5 days a week with the scouts and many camping trips. Cooking in an open fire is the best isn't it? ;) So anyway, my dad took me and 4 others in the troop to some store even more remote than where we lived, and he bought all of us the Camille's Scout Knife with blue scales. Mine never made it home. One of them dudes pocketed mine even though we all got one. No good deed goes unpunished I guess. Well, in light of that incident, I have no desire to replace it, but rather I'd love to throw in another entry for Old Hunter Old Hunter . I know you don't know me, but I read a LOT more than I post ;)

I'll throw my name in, if you allow.

I started in Cubs, parents took so many photos since I was so young. I don't think I have a single picture as a Boy Scout. LOL.

I remember my first scout knife was a single bladed Victorinox, I think it was the solo. It had the BSA logo on the handle. My parents recognized that I would be a knife nut, and they wanted to limit my ability to cut myself as much as possible (unsuccessful I might add).

I remember being pretty upset, as I bent the tip as a kid, and years later when I found the knife,I sent the knife to Victorinox to fix the blade, and they replaced the plastic scales too, and the BSA logo was not the same, it was some newer updated version.

Not a problem Old Hunter Old Hunter . I just gathered that it would be a valued addition to your collection and I'm hoping that this BSA knife makes it to a little ving home lol 😂
Now if someone were able to recover the actual knife my dad bought I'd be all about it, but that would never happen :(

Awesome GAW that really brought back many happy memories of fun times after reading all the posts. Thanks for the opportunity to enter.
In the late 1950s I started out as a Cub Scout in an active troop and moved on to Boy Scouts for about 2 years. Unfortunately our Scout leader passed away and no one in my town would fill in, ending my hopes to make the journey to Eagle Scout.
Some of my best memories are that of my troop’s first Pinewood Derby which was fairly new at the time. Lots of work building the car paid off as I won all the races, got a trophy, and my name in the newspaper.

The first Pinewood Derby was held in Manhattan Beach, CA in 1953.
