Gear Thread

I’m an Irish American. We still retain the gift of gab/silver tongue of our homeland.
I made some good, logical arguments sprinkled with fond memories and added some flattery for good measure.
I think I may have bought “Helga” some more years... maybe.

Woo Hoo!

Hmmmmm. That can be the kind of thing that one sells knives to fund. Booooooo.
That’s definitely not happening!
I already sold off my knife collection to fund my CPK collection. I’ve already got her, at least, considering fixing it with no mention of knives. Plus I have a couple side jobs lined up for this month. Those will cover half of it. Things will be tight but we can get it done. We spoke about it for an hour last night. She texted me this morning saying, “Maybe you’re right.” I haven’t been right about anything since I got married - so I think that’s a good sign!

Nice! As far as these thing go with me, pulling the engine means a complete restoration.

I mean you pull the engine, might as well do anything else that needs to be done while you are down there. Like
Body work! Then the door seals while they are off. New glass maybe?

Next thing you know I’m 5 times over budget and it took 10 times as long as I expected.

Let me give you and example with my newest car.

Wanted a second set of rims for snow tires. Who could argue against that?! I figured $1500-$2000.

Decided the factory rims would be good for snow tires and bought a set of factory forged rims from an M3, which were new summer wheels so needed appropriate tires. That was $4500.

Then the suspension needed to be done cause hell no to that wheel gap. $5000 or so there cause I got coil overs.

Then the reflectors on the bumpers stood out so those needed to be painted, because I wanted the black grills to tie in the M3 wheels. That was another $1000.

Once I had the exterior done, I didn’t like a couple things in the interior like the steering wheel and the huge airbag warning stickers so I ordered Euro sun visors and a new heated steering wheel with M stitching from an M3. That was another $1000. When the wheel came I didn’t like the plastic cover on the existing airbag vs the leather trim that’s on the M3 so had to order that matching airbag, was $1200.

I figured while I was in there I’d do trunk divider and a couple odds and ends that was another $1200. It’s basically an M wagon now which isn’t available in North America so it looks awesome

3 months later I get rear ended and the car is in the shop, $33,000 damage and still counting. Been there since early March.

I still don’t have snow tires.

I hear you!
Fortunately, for my wife and children, I don’t have access to much. I keep a little from each paycheck in cash (pocket money) and the rest goes into the checking account. My lovely wife takes care of everything from that point on. If I was in charge of our finances we would be living in that van. It would be cherry and full of knives but we wouldn’t have much else.

$3.5K - $5K depending on parts availability. That’s a chunk for us.
My wife’s real sticking point is that we bought it for less than that.

And it’s pretty rusty!

Unless the case is somehow cracked, the crank and cam journals can be bored and a rebuild kit is typically in the $500 range and that’s something you’d be able to do with a decent set of tools and a good manual, trust me.

I’ve got all the tools. I lack time, space and knowledge. I would need a tutor on hand.

May I suggest you Mad Max that ride, drop a Northstar engine in or something and add a supercharger with like a large scoop that you can spit gasoline into

Edit- looks like Subaru engines fit

This is a trap, an ambush! You should shut up, think hard and ask, "did I forget a holiday, anniversary or birthday?" Have you noticed any new jewelry? Seriously man, tread lightly and consider your next move. Listen for the sound of a grenade pin being pulled out by the trip wire....

I’d agree this applies to most couples. Not in this case though. I used to buy her wonderful (at times expensive) gifts when we were dating. I continued this early in the marriage, though the response was different. See it’s “our” money I’m spending now. So she would return the gifts. Further, I would have to listen to a tirade on our financial situation. Nowadays, she makes me promise I will not buy her birthday/anniversary/holiday gifts. I thought this was a trap and bought her gifts a couple times so as not to incur any wrath. It was the wrong move!
She couldn’t be more type A and I couldn’t be more type B.
Her mother has commented that it’s good we found each other or we would have screwed up two perfectly normal people’s lives.
