GEC #15 boys knife easy open?

you an easily lower the blade by filing a minute amount of steel off the kick.

true, but filing the kick also lowers the backspring, which is NOT cool:

Your options if you receive a knife that does not meet your expectations for fit and finish, is to return for refund, or replacement. You can also send it to GEC for repair.

I googled knife parts description for you

also, here are photos of my modified (left) and unmodified (right) Sheepfoot Charlow kicks

and the resulting back spring drop when closed (the modified one on the bottom). Changing the kick does not affect the spring position at half stop, nor at full open. fwiw, both my sheepfoot charlows have proud backsprings in half stop. The single bladed one is flush when full open. The two bladed one has the spring just barely below the liner, enough to catch a finger nail, when fully open. I currently have 5 GECs on the #15 frame. None of them have flush springs in the half stop position, not even the one that I sent to GEC for repair of a wobbly blade, that I caused by opening and closing the knife too many times while watching TV. In fact, 3 out of 5 of my 15's have wobbly blades from the same "break in" behavior of mine. I have not been willing to send them back to GEC for repair, nor do I have experience hammering my own pivot pins to tighten them up.

and here is the result of filing the kick, on the knife on the left. The blade now sits about 3/16" lower at the tip

I'm no expert by any stretch, but I wouldn't consider that as minute. I was talking about maybe taking the edge off the kick. That pic, to me, looks like alot of material taken away. We were only talking about a fingernail depth of room to seat the blade deeper from the other pic, the metal to be removed would be less that that. Again, no expert here, just going by what I've picke up along the way.

Several years ago, I very slightly flattened the kick on a Boker Stockman's main blade and fixed this very thing. Sets perfectly now with no ill effects.

yes, I took off as much as possible, because the blade edge still is not touching the backspring. and yes, the amount of drop to the backspring varies, but in all cases changing the kick, changes the backspring.

Since the OP is talking about buying a NEW knife, I suggested he NOT modify the kick, as he would then NOT be able to return it. Better to return unmodified for replacement, imo. Replacement is better than sending to GEC, waiting a month, and hoping its fixed. Just my opinion.

GEC knives vary in the position of the blade. Which will be demostrated shortly, when someone posts their EO with the edge of the blade below the EO notch. :-). The pictured knife I posted is not mine, and I dont think the owner has any issues with the edge of the blade showing. Im just sharing the photo, because it clearly shows what is going on.

My suggestion to the OP would be to contact a vendor, and send them the photo that explains what he does not want, so the vendor can inspect the knife before shipping, possibly even provide photos.. but, I think its too late and the OP already placed an order.. so soon we should see a pic of His knife, and all will be swell.. :-)

I hope the 15 EO I have on its way to me doesnt have the edge showing, but most pictures Ive seen of these knives dont have that issue. Luckily for me I only buy from reputable dealers with return policies :p This knife with a sheepsfoot is so fine!

This isn't the best picture, but it has gotten too dark for me to take one that is any clearer:

What I can say is that I have been carrying this knife nonstop for three weeks now, and I absolutely love it. The edge definitely does not sit above the EO notch. This knife has really grown on me! Everything I could ever want it to be. Initially I was apprehensive about EDCing a knife with only a sheepsfoot blade, but after carrying for awhile, i realized that it has many strengths that I have been missing out on. It is razor sharp and the strong tip make it excellent for detailed cuts and opening those infernal blister packs. I only wish i had a knife like this back in the days when I still bought CDs and DVDs!

Again, there is always going to be variation in knives, but if my experience is any indication of what to expect, I say buy these with absolute confidence that it will be in your pocket for a long time!

Cheers

oh hells yes! I love how lightweight it is and nice the ebony feels. Will definitely be making its way to the (law) office sooner than later.

They look great, but why on earth did they put SCOUT in the middle of the shield? It completely puts me off. :(

Send that one back to GEC that sits too high and make them fix it, that should have been picked up during QA.

The Sheepsfoot EO will prob be my next GEC purchase unless something dramatically interesting shows up on the for sale boards before I get the itch again.

Personally, I like the "Scout" logo... its just something unique and different that adds to the feel of the knife. It's not like it says "Balls" or something.

Here is one of two that I have and I love them. Being a Scout leader and my son being a Scout makes me like it even more...

See, now that is a beautiful knife. :)

I still need to find out what type of cuts the Sheepsfoot blade is designed for over say a spear or clip.

I love all the 2 bladed versions.

Thank you Merovingian and I too am a fan of the two balde version. I feel it gives me more options.

Could someone please post a picture of the GEC 15 EO next to a 2 bladed GEC 15 boys knife? I have the EO version but curious to see the difference in thickness between the two

I am very tempted by this one. Can anyone who has one tell me how hard the pull is on the pen secondary? I have weak nails, and have had to pass on some patterns I really like the looks of because it was a struggle to open.

Also, I vaguely remember this being discussed, but is the 'scout' on the shield a reference to "To Kill a Mockingbird"?

I have no idea why the "scout" is on the shield. It has absolutely no resemblance to a Boy Scout knife. Doesn't bother me but I'd have preferred if they left it blank or no shield at all.

From earlier wonderings regarding the Scout shield:
I would like to hear too, but I bet it has something to do with this old Remington R963 design (cannot wait to own one of the GEC versions):

Remington_R963_opt.jpg
I showed the Remington picture to Bill Howard yesterday, and while it's definitely of the same ilk it's not actually the knife (or even brand) which inspired this new GEC release. Bill says he can't remember exactly which one he drew from specifically, as he's looked at so many different examples along the way (he tried to find it while we were there, but to no immediate avail). The one the #15 most closely resembles has a similar simple SCOUT shield, not the Smoky the Bear hat. ;)

I was skeptical when I first spied the in-progress pictures of the covers only, but having seen the finished knives I think they look great.

Almost every time I walked into the GEC store and saw one of these in the display, I did a "What's that?!" double-take (in a good way!), only to re-realize I was looking at the new #15.

Hope this helps.
