GEC # 23--Bull Lock (LRL) or Liner lock or Slip Joint/ no lock/ UPDATE w/ Pics

Ah! Forgot one was still there! Cool. I have leather, nylon, and custom 110 sheaths--maybe it will fit... I still have a little concern regarding the durability of the lever itself. Then again, I've seen some old variants (users, online pics) and they all seem intact.

I have a Buck and a Camillus riggers knife, the Buck was actually contracted from Camillus, the levers on those are pretty sturdy, and the spring locking the marlinspike open is pretty stiff. Back when I was in the Coast Guard the Boatswains mates all carried the Buck riggers knife, and they used them hard. I never remember hearing of one failing.

As for the comparison to the liner locks from old Schrade knives, apples and oranges compared to GEC's liner lock, GEC utilizes a steel liner which also works against the butt of the tang, and they nailed it. My 23 LL has zero blade play when open, it is a superlatively engineered and executed design. I am hoping for a similar experience with the Bull Lock.

I'm guessing it is a beast and very solid. Good to hear that the design is proven. What to do, what to do!

sitflyer, thanks for the picture. so you lift up on the lever to pivot it forward and that unlocks the blade ?
To me it looks like this lever would be in the way of where i like to put my thumb when i'm holding the knife to use it.

A GEC #23 fits nicely in a Buck Crosslock belt sheath.

Patience grasshopper ;) It won't be here till Monday...

Aaahhhh! OK brother--but no guarantees that I won't order one myself by then! Looking forward to your thoughts on the matter.

Well I've had my Bull lock for a couple days now, and have carried it a bit and done some cutting with it. Mine has a very moderate to mild pull, no half stop, but the cam tang does kind of stall out mid closing. Action closing was a little lazy initially, a good flushing with WD40 and working the action freed it up a bit, but it is not a bear trap. At times, if the thumb lock is rotated out, the cam of it can stall or slow the blades closing. Pretty much what I expected there. One handed closing is easily accomplished by holding the knife, edge up, and disengaging the lock with the thumb, then use the thigh to close the blade with pressure to the spine of the blade while keeping the fingers out of the path. With just a little practice this can be done quickly and fluidly without even looking.

As far as cutting comfort, the lock acts as a pretty decent thumb placement point, I tend to not use that grip very often, and with my thumb on the side of the bolster the thumb lock rests on the web of my hand. I didn't feel much of a hot spot, but you know it's there. The neatest thing for me was using a choke grip, the protrusion of the lock indexes the knife nicely against my middle finger. It's a big knife, but I have large hands and these 23's feel like they were built for me.

I'm really glad I obtained one of these before they are gone, I enjoy different and unusual locks on knives, and this one is pretty cool. For ease of use, if I had to rate them in order,

easiest= slip joint, it just doesn't get any easier than snapping a slippie open and closed.

lock back, these two would be a tie for comfort as well.

liner lock, similar comfort but there is that slight possibility of grip interference with the lock. I give a tie to lockback and linerlock for ease of use.

Bull lock, Bull lock comes in last for ease of use and comfort, no way around that really, it is what it is,

Now, does anyone know if GEC made the 23 in a single blade version similar to the Bull Lock and liner lock?

Thanks Sitflyer--mine comes in tomorrow. I'll offer my impressions soon. With all the views this thread has received, and knowing that quite a few bull locks have been bought, I'm surprised that more experiences have not been posted. If you have a minute, could you post a pic of what you mean about the grip with the lock resting on your middle finger. How secure is the lock?

Thanks again!

I forgot that part, the lockup is rock solid, no movement at all. Also you have to really move the lever to disengage it. I might give this lock a little edge over the lock back thinking about it. You don't have to change your grip much to close this knife, just roll it, thumb the lock open and swipe the blade shut with the thigh. After snapping this pic I closed the knife without even thinking about it.

This knife feels very secure in a choked grip.

Very nice! Thank you much! Looks like you can peel fruit in that grip pretty easily. I figured the lock-up was good--there has to be an upside to the lock being "in the way"... do you think that the lever will hold up to constant use? The pin is thin, it seems, but experience tells me that it is likely stronger that I think.

I think the pin in the lever will hold up just fine. There isn't a whole lot of force being applied to it and both sides have ample peening on mine.

Wow, I see 18,880 views! No way that is correct, there must be a glitch in the software.

Yeah, I thought that was outrageous too... who knows--maybe we are a popular read.

OK, so mine arrived and I have to say, I am enjoying it. It's a keeper and with a little use, it has become every bit as comfortable to use as any of my knives. It also fit in every Buck 110 sheath I have, vertical, horizontal, custom, etc... So, I flushed it a bit, oiled it, reprofiled the edge a bit, and got a patina going. Pics added for the 19, 000 + viewers of this thread (can that really be right???):
