Over in the thread about the GEC 35 I explained why my ebony 35 is making it hard for me to carry some of my knives. So, in that vein here's the GAW.

First the rules. Just be a poster in the Traditional area. If you'd like post a photo or an anecdote of a knife that's surprised you or anything you'd like to share.

The knife is a current edition of Case's Canoe in Rough Black also known as Gum Fuddy. It's unused and unsharpened although I may have carried it a time or two. I'll run this until Friday at 7PM EDT. Good Luck.

I'm in, Joe! Been a longtime carrier of traditionals, but only recently decided to start collecting. Oh, not to acquire some fancy knives as an investment to keep in a safe or put in a display case--I want beautiful, functional knives I can carry. Have some trappers and stockmans (stockmen?), but got my eye on the canoe, especially amber bone or gum fuddy. Maybe I'll post something later with a photo (not at my desktop right now).

That's a gorgeous knife, I definitely want in on this. Of course the first few entries hardly ever get picked, but I'm willing to take the bullet for the rest of you :D

A knife that surprised me...
This "cheap" Case Wharncliffe Mini Trapper has surprised the heck out of me. I ordered it on a whim thinking I'd send it back or pass it on like most of my Case brand knives. But when I got it, this knife was finding its way into my pocket more than any other knife I own. It is remarkably well put together for a modern Case knife, must have been a good QC Day. The handles are ugly but endearing and I now find them "charming". I'm not afraid to use it hard, get it dirty, and put it away wet. The Wharncliffe has proven to be a very useful blade shape for a variety of tasks. Finally, the snap open and closed is ridiculously good. It definitely surprised me.

Sorry about the glare from the blade, it just proves that I take recent pictures rather than pulling them from a library. Lol

I'm in for this one...thank you! Good luck to everyone :)
I have been holding out on the SAK thing for quite a while now. I have an older model SAK that I've used for random tasks over the years but never carried one for EDC. It was too bulky and I didn't need all the blades it had for the most part. The blade combo that I find most useful for daily carry is a traditional camp or scout knife with a spear blade, can opener, cap lifter with screwdriver tip and a punch blade. So I decided to try out an alox SAK Pioneer and I am surprised how much I like this thing. The size and weight in the hand is perfect for me and it has everything I need (plus the bonus screwdriver tip on the can opener). I guess I shouldn't be surprised that a newly produced SAK would impress me but to get front-of-the-line privs over most of my older traditional knives for EDC sure does :)

Not an entry for me, Alan. I just wanted to thank you for your continued generosity. I get excited when I see that beautiful picture of your beach pop up in a thread. I just know I'm in for an exceptionally photographed, beautiful knife along with a wonderful anecdote or quick laugh. Whoever wins that Gum Fuddy Case will be receiving one from the best. Thank you, my friend.

I will offer up a knife that surprised the heck out of me: my dad's old Klein 44034. At 7" OAL and 4oz, it's one of the biggest folders I own. It goes completely against my entire knife-carry mantra of small and discrete, but I actually enjoy carrying it from time to time. I originally grabbed it from my parents' house for the sentimental value, never expecting anything out of it other than to sit in my knife case and be a reminder. It is big, clunky, and the edge my dad left on it looked like he had sharpened it with his teeth. I reprofiled it and cleaned it up out of respect, but it just sat in the knife case. One day when I was feeling a bit sentimental and blue while remembering my dad, I tossed it into my pocket. Now, I find myself carrying it a couple times a month simply because I like the knife. Totally mind blowing to me.

That looks to be from Japan. If it is I have a few and they punch way above their weight. Very practical knives.

Nice know and way to go on the generosity, whoever wins will surely love it.
I'm not in as I've won a knife recently, but this is sure a knife I could see in my pocket.

You nailed it. Frank responded to me a while back, and he believed the steel used was AUS-6 or AUS-8. I haven't put calipers on it, but I believe it's 3/32" at the spine. Locks like a bank vault; no blade play at all. A steal at the $35 or whatever they charge. I don't know if they're still produced in Japan or not, though.

The ones I have are marked Seki-Japan which I believe is where AG Russell has knives made.

Please count me in, and thank you for the opportunity. Below is a picture of my newest Case.

I like that purple dyed bone. Is that the 33032? I'm going to have to find one of those.

Edit: Sorry for the extra chatter. I'll pay better attention to where I'm posting.
