Howdy!

Looking at purchasing my first traditional folder, curious to what people love/hate about the Viper model. Any recommendations on similar styled knives? seems like the Viper is a hard model to come by!

Thanks,

Al

They're coming with another run of them soon.

I've had three of them in the past so what I can offer is...Great knife, fantastic ergos and primary grind was nice and thin. A beautiful slicer, weighty and a solid working knife due to the size.

Only reason I got rid of mine was due to the lack of carry. I ended up realising I prefer a blade shape with a belly.

Thanks! I must admit I'm more interested in the looks vs the ergos! But you are absolutely right it probably can't perform at the same level i am used to based on blade shape!

Depends on what you use the knife for. A Wharncliffe excels at many tasks. Skinning game is not one of them.

I know this has been said many times but it has a lot of merit. If I had it to do over again starting out buying traditionals I would purchase several different patterns in the Rough Rider brand to get a good feel for what I like in traditional knives. They are decent quality and very inexpensive. Just my two cents.

Having recently come back to traditional; I've basically stuck to single blade models by GEC. I have/carry a couple of 15s, 77s and 92s...when I first received my 47 (Viper), my initial reaction was that it was too big. It was an odd response, given my taste in moderns; but the traditionals I carry are smaller. Once I put it in my pocket, and started using it, my concerns about the size disappeared. I don't notice its presence in jeans/khakis...but I do notice it my work pants. Not a big deal, it isn't obtrusive; but I'm aware of it, and it sometimes prints when it's flat in the pocket.
I'm a big fan of the wharncliffe blade - it handles most of my routine cutting chores with ease; and the shape lens itself well to a number of non-cutting tasks. (ie, less than an hour ago, I used the back of the blade to clear label stickers out of the feed on the printer. I looked around for something else to use, then just closed the door and used the knife.)

Here's a picture from the thread I posted about it last month (top to bottom: 47, 92, 77, 15, 62)

Awsome! Ryouchijtx informed me about the presale going on so I've put my name down for a GEC model!

Eodjuggernaut, sent you a PM as talking about such things in threads is a no-no. :)

I'll echo everything Tim said in post #2.

My Viper is a laser and slices like nobody's business. It doesn't get carried much, though. I had been carrying it when I was wearing slacks...it looks fantastic and carries well, but the lack of belly means that it "may" be passed up for a single bladed #77 from time to time.

I just picked one up in trade and I'll echo the other comments here. The size is great, the lanyard tube is awesome, and the blade is a laser, but I need belly on my knives. My primary task for traditionals is food prep cutting up food on my plate for myself or my kids. That's not something you can do with a wharncliffe. But for any kind of draw cuts or piercing, it's hard to beat. Also, this thread is seriously lacking in pictures.

Sean has the right idea, this thread does need more pics :D

That is a very nice looking knife Armando.
I also have reserved one of the new ones with the Hawkbill in Stag.

Thanks Harry. I like that this one has different jigging than the run of the mill stuff.

So I got notified that the 47 that I had reserved as micarta Unknown was going to be brown snakeskin. Sounds interesting and brown snakeskin on a viper seems appropriate. Does anybody have any pics of traditionals sporting this?
