GEC #56 Dogleg Jack Spear

Thanks Mark, I'm very happy with this one! It's more yellow (which I like) than I was able to show so it's actually much nicer than my pic. The pull is fairly light (which also suits me) 4-5. Excellent fit but with a couple minor issues with finish. Micarta has slight sanding burns on edges and the liners have been left very sharp along the blade well. Looks like someone missed breaking the edge. Both easy fixes with a little hand sanding but mentioned hoping GEC is aware.
Overall an extremely satisfying pocket knife.

edit; wiping the micarta with alcohol cleaned more than half the black off the edges, the slight discoloration may come from the brass liners not burning ???

Maybe the black marks are buffing compound? I've seen black stuff on GEC edges before. Possibly micarta is textured enough to hold onto some of it.

Sure loving this little 2 Blade Dogleg jack :D

Yes, I believe you may be right. Most of the darkened edge has been removed so it is something on the micarta not the micarta itself. I should know better than to come to a conclusion from observation alone. I've removed the inaccurate remark from my previous post.

You have a Fayette Jack too, don't you? If so, I'd love to hear your thoughts on how they compare.
Yes I have one sporting camel bone .
Not sure it’s a fare comparison because my Fayette is a single blade and 56 is a two blade . The Fayette feels good in hand but the weight and thickness of the two blade 56 feels better to me . Fit and finish with my two it’s very close but love the satin finish on the bolsters with the 56 . I think consistency of first class fit and finish goes to Gec vs North woods from my personal experience it’s more hit or miss .
That being said I love each of the ones I have . Oh and the Fayette is pinchable which I really like and the 56 isn’t but has a nice pull not to strong or weak about a 5 or 6 on the main so it’s not a issue .

Your c

Your very welcome :)
Btw the current NorthWoods are made by Gec Incase you didn’t know and my post above are from my personal experience with both and for others it may differ .
Again There both great knives

Yes, I picked up a Denim Fayette just to see what the hype was about. I'm about to post a thread on the Exchange to pass it along. I like the feel of the denim and I was surprised at how good the knife felt given the smaller size. I tend to like something bigger, but the dogleg makes it feel good in just about any grip. I'd probably keep it if I weren't trying to keep my purchasing to a minimum. It just seemed like too much fun not to try out and then pass along, if that makes sense. I was curious about the GEC 56 for the reason that the Fayette seemed so nice.

Totally understand and I do the same thing myself keeping the rotation going. It’s part of the fun with our love and passion for this hobby

You are far too modest...your pics are always a treat and the knives wonderfully staged! :)

- aah, thank you.......had missed that previous post of Dylan’s - so, for a camera-phone, such wonderful photos :thumbsup:

I am only just beginning to get into all these wonderful knives that come under a numbering system, or should I say, just beginning to understand the numbering...!

Do most of them come under the umbrella of GEC ie TC/Northwoods too....?

From what I understand (and my knowledge of today’s traditionals fits in a thimble) the TC Barlows, on GEC patterns 14 & 15, are reserved by gentleman’s agreement for SFOs by Charlie Campagna.

Northwoods Knives are owned by Derrick Bohn of Knives Ship Free. Derrick bought the trademark and name for Northwoods and Scagel Knives from Dave Shirley. Recently Northwoods are being made by GEC for Derrick, but in the past they were made by Queen. There have been rumblings from time to time that Derrick was exploring Northwoods folders from other makers. Bark River makes a fixed blade Northwoods for Knives Ship Free. So, while being made by GEC, Northwoods is not a GEC line.

The best source I have found for the GEC numbering system is their website, then choose the link for Collect by Pattern.

Someone correct me if any of this is wrong...I am constantly learning and the route that pocket knife manufacturing takes between manufacturer, assemblers and marketing can be confusing at best.

Received my Mustard Jigged Bone #56 this week. Very impressed with GEC’c efforts on this one. This model has an old school look and feel to it.
I think their Tidioute line has always been just a shield away from going from a solid, handsome knife to a classically beautiful one.

Have to agree. I reserved the single blade mustard. When I first saw the coloring, I was not excited. But after having it in hand, I will say this is just a wonderful looking knife with a great shield to boot. This knife is only going to get better looking after time. I repent of all my early judgements. Might be smart to grab one before their gone.

I think Mustard Bone has been offered before, on the Tidioute Cuban Pens. I agree, grand shield and should wear well.

But my heart is set on the Pheasant Feathers single, my dealer didn't know if he would be getting any in and I'm beginning to get agitated. Europe is a long way from America....

Thanks, Will

Do you want some help with that? I’ve not shipped anything internationally in some years but I’d give it a go for you if you need someone.

With all the great knives and gorgeous photos going up, this thread needs to be closed before I get myself in trouble. I don't need another tube showing up in the mail right now ;)
