GEC #56 Dogleg Jack Spear

I don't mind the reverse side pull, or the fact the pen sits behind the spear too much. Case does the peanut like that and it seems OK. I would have preferred a capped end too. I like the threaded bolster and the wiener shield though. I placed an order for an Ebony one a couple days ago.

I just ordered an ebony and an amber jigged bone... looking forward to it.

I've never owned that pattern, but it looks to be perfect pocket size!

I have a #417 in my collection (with a different shield), probably made by New York Knife Co.

That is one hall of a good loking knife there Lambertiana :cool:

Firsties!

Ah, I love that machine shop smell that comes from crackin' open a new tube from Great Eastern Cutlery.
So I got my ebony spearpoint dogleg today. My initial impressions are that I really like this knife. Smooth walk and talk, and just the right amount of pull for someone who is fingernail challenged. Both blades are very sharp out of the tube. There is one puzzling oddity though, on both mark and pile side, two of the four pins are flush with the handle, and two are hammered down at least .025-.050" into the ebony. It looks major uneven. It may be a show stopper for some and I can't imagine a reason for it. But since I plan to carry and use it I will not lose any sleep over it.

Just a neat side note, on the back spring side the layer of ebony slab/brass liner/steel spring/brass liner/steel spring/brass liner/ebony slab makes for a cool visual.

Thanks for the pictures. Looks even better than I thought with the ebony. I'll do a photo comparison to my clip blade primitive bone dogleg as soon as mine arrives.

Thanks for the nice pics, Corey. I have one en route, so it's good to have a few customer photos to whet the ol' appetite.

There's nothing particularly unusual about your knife pins. Flush rocker and end pins, and (sometimes deeply) recessed scale pins are fairly common from GEC. The recessed pins can look like bottomless holes when certain scale materials like extra thick Primitive bone and stag are used. As Charlie (Waynorth) said in another thread, very long pins have a tendency to tilt, so keeping them uniformly short is a QC stopgap.

Wow! GEC did a great job with this one! The ebony one has a very warm and inviting look to it. It looks smooth and rounded if you know what I mean.

Thanks for the shots Corey. Particularly like the side and spine views.

What's the wood like? Striped or dark?

The pin issue does bother some people (me sometimes) but the ones on yours look fine to me. A stag 73 Liner lock I have has quite thick stag, two of the pins were very recessed and I didn't fancy the look of it. Got some brass tubing, cut to length, glued in and rounded off with a fine file, looks totally good cosmetic fix.

After these pictures, I'm looking forward more than ever! Few days wait for me at least though.......

That gold glitter stuff does absolutely zilch for me however the spear point looks pretty useful.

My photos are pretty bad but the ebony on the mark side is very dark brown, almost black with some ever so subtle bands of shadowy bronze through it. The pile side is somewhat lighter in tone with more obivous grain variation. It's truly beautiful wood. I can see why its been the choice of good slipjoints since Moses.

That ebony looks real nice. The slightly irregular pins just give it a bit of character, I'd say. Thanks for sharing the pics.

Nice pics Corey!! One thing I just noticed, the spear models have 4 pins as opposed to 3 pins in the clip point #56.

True:thumbup: And they look all the better for it.

All of the Bareheads including the stag, bones have this. So too does the Gold Spandex -not that you'd notice:D
