GEC #57 "Geppetto" Whittler - New Clip-Points

You are welcome Gary :)

I like that a lot! I prefer the clip on this version. I have given both some use and thats my conclusion.

Yours is a real looker for sure!

Kevin

Thanks Kevin, here are few more, shot tonight with some better lighting as I had to take some photos of a watch I put up forsale;
I'm liking this knife more more all the time, the coping blade is still one of my favourites and the main clip is pretty slick looking...

The Tomato Red Acrylic surprised me. It's most attractive and makes the knife 'come alive', much more compelling than in these rather poor pictures.

That is some combination there, the red really stands out and the ivory, is, well, just cool. and Thanks Kevin for popping those images onto the next page, I am really liking this knife a lot, which says a lot about it, while I loved the wharncliff version, I find that when it comes to wharncliff blades, I consider the coping blade kinda like a wharncliff with an attitude ;), I prefer those blades to be fairly short so you have tight control of the point when in use. With the other version with the main blade as a wharncliff, I just didn't find myself drawn to pulling the main blade out for much work, always relying on the coping blade the most, but this one, I utilize all three blades almost equally in daily chores, and as I mentioned before the 3 1/2" frame size seems to be just about right. For a larger grunt type work folder I have the Benchmade Barrage that I use for heavier work, nice knife too.

Still thinking this one will hang on for a while, the size and blade combination is great, fits my hand nicely, but the nickel silver does scratch easily and loses that nice finish pretty quickly in your pocket, even when you take care not to let it bang around, it still gets a little scratched.

I normally carry this in my watch pocket of my jeans, fits there nicely

So, as I did with the other one, I used some 600 grit sand paper and applied a nice brushed finished to the bolsters, the way I do it is to cut a piece about thumb width and about 3" long or so, I grip the paper in my right hand and with the right hand I pull the paper STRAIGHT from one end of the bolster to the other, all the while pushing down on the sand paper with my left thumb, I keep doing this until I get the finish I like. Here are some images taken of the knife;

Here is a Before of the bolster,

same bolster, knife flipped end for end to photograph it better;

I was worried about the serial numbered end, but that worked out ok, probably won't take a lot more to make it fade away but the brushed finish looks good and also hides further scratches too, so you don't have to do this as often as you would if it were polished.

and here's a shot of the other side of the larger bolster end

And the blades are keeping their edges very nicely and wow do they CUT !!!

Nice work Gary, like that brushed look. I can see some nice patina marks trying to show themselves as well:thumbup:

Indeed they are, I've taken an AG Russells Rust Eraser to the blades every now and then, but I may need to try and force an even patina on there sooner!

Also one thing about the sanding bit, you may want to wrap tape along the open ends of the bolsters to help prevent dust falling down inside, I spent the morning with some oil getting the blades to open smoothly again, nothing major, you should always oil the joints! One thing I found was using the plastic hypodermic needle thing I got from Chris Reeve's knives, when the grease they have inside is gone, I take and pull the plunger out and put in some light oil, the long plastic needle helps to get the oil right where you need it, very handy...

And it still resides in my pocket every day, that's saying a lot ;)
Just touched up the bolsters today, the 33 is starting to wane a little bit, but still legible, it didn't really sink in until today that it is one of 35 made, you'd think it'd be one of 50, so mine was right near the last one, serial numbered at least...

Digging up an old thread ..... I'm looking at the Geppetto and figured i'd get your alls take on the wharncliffe vs clip versions. I see some of you have/have had both.

Thanks a bunch.

I'm in!
I was actually kind of sad about the shield side. It's my first stag folder so maybe it's perfect, but it just looks weird to me. The non shield side is awesome.

Sorry for double post, but I was looking to try and find quantities produced and couldn't find it. Does anyone have that info?

+1. :thumbup: Looks great on both sides. Incredible popcorn on the pile side, great shield fitting on the mark side. It's hafted very well.

Cody, if you go to great eastern cutlery dot net and click on production totals for the appropriate year (last two digits of your pattern number - I think 2013/12 for those) you'll find what you want.

Isn't this the total Gary was mentioning? 35 it seems.

Grand pile side for popcorn and a great shield inlet on the mark side, you got a beaut!

The nice thing about that knife is where the shield sits, in that deep valley of the Stag. Much better than popping out on the surface!
Nice knife!!
