GEC #66 Stockman....YIPPEE!!

Anyone seen pictures of this #66 Calf Roper? If so post a link please.

I see you found your answer elsewhere.

If anyone would like to know where I got my info please let me know and I will send you a link. The #66 Calf Roper does not yet exist so there are no photos of it yet but the handle material info is available.

I'm kind of liking the looks of this one (minus the gaudy blade etching)

Here's what GEC calls "Calf Roper" (GEC Photo) The Sheepfoot blade and Spey blade on this knife will probably be pretty short -- 2" or less. Kinda short for a working knife. My .02¢

GEC is reintroducing their 4 1/8" #53 Cuban Stockman. This is mine from their first release in 2007.

The shield on the new release knife is positioned further forward on the scale. I have one of these new release knives on order with Bumble Bee Jigged Bone scales. It should bet here this week and I'll post pictures when it arrives.

Yeah, I am definately getting one of these in Primitive Bone if I'm quick enough.

I like that Ebony one too. Looking forward to the Cocobolo as well.

I don't like the blade etching either.

Makes it look like some kind of novelty knife.

I wish GEC would get past this.

The ebony handled version of this pattern looks great. Does anybody have photos of the #66 with other GEC patterns for size comparison? I assume this will be of a more stout width than the original jack variety of this pattern but the 3.5" is a great pocket size, in my opinion, and it would be nice to see it alongside some others.

Thanks in advance.

I have the bumble bee Cuban on order too, it shipped today. I'm hoping to have it by wednesday or thursday. Once I saw a set of pics from a certain seller that highlighted the black vs. yellow contrast on the scales, with the polished bolsters, I was sold.

Blues tried to get me to go Northfield, but I fell in love with this particular bumble bee Tidioute, too hard, too fast. The poor green bone Northfield never had a chance.

On topic, I see that the Calf Ropers are beginning to come in to stock at resellers.

Well, after all, it is traditional to have blade decorations. All of the major knife companies have done it. It's been done by all the old companies and some that are still around; Case, Boker, and Buck, too.

Some people actually like it.

In any case, most of the time, it comes right off if you don't like it. Flitz will take the GEC etches right off. Sodbusters are really popular around here, most of those have etches if not pictures on the blade, yet I never hear people complain like they do about GEC doing it.

It just seems very hypocritical to me to complain about blade etches in the Traditional Forum. No?

Well,I'm not real fond of fancy etches either. The good part is that is a sweet design, and the etching comes off.I really like the looks of that Ebony.-Jim

I sure hope they continue to make both and in various bones too!

Me too, I'm a gigantic stockman fan.

At first I thought smaller ones were better to carry in your pocket... but they always end up sideways, and stick into your leg. The longer ones (over 4") are long engough that they don't easily turn sideways, so they are more likely to carry standing up.

The cuban shape is perfect too, because of the completely rounded ends. I don't like large standard pattern stockmans as much (for pocket use), because of the square bolsters.

In keeping with the courteous and respectful manner of this subforum, please, let's discuss this privately.

I have no way of contacting you, joe-bob, but I am willing to discuss this further.

Shoot me an email if the mood should strike you.

Well, I'll admit to not liking blade etches either and would greatly prefer if manufacturers would make "sterile" blades for those who would prefer them that way.

Regardless, this avocation is big enough to encompass a variety of points of view without anyone's shorts getting twisted.

Nobody here needs to be an apologist for any manufacturer and in the end we all get to vote with our wallets. That said, it is refreshing when the companies take these perspectives into consideration.

Blade etches do vary a lot, the one on that Calf Roper is pretty awful to my eye, some are tolerable/pleasant (Böker do them tastefully) Never seen an etch that is so good that it stops me from wanting to use or patina the knife though :D
But, etches certainly seem to have a long tradition on knives, like them or not. It's the ones on stainless that bother me more....stubborn:eek:

Well, maybe if I get good enough at grinding one day, I can offer a blade etch removal service, and try to match the factory blade finish. I like some blade etches (the stock Tidioute is kind of neat, reminds me of an old saloon or something), but some (like the cattle rancher/calf roper) are just obnoxious IMO. I don't hate them, but I certainly don't like them.

Ian, it's simple enough that you'd probably starve waiting for that first padded envelope to show up in your mailbox...but, then again...who knows? It takes all kinds (and we've got plenty).
