GEC 68 Pony Jack 2021

It’s definitely disappointing when you have paid plenty of good money for a knife and it doesn’t have the basic functionality down pat. I’ll overlook plenty on a $35 Case I pick up on eBay, but on a GEC I do expect a little more. Disappointing that they won’t fix “grey market” or knives purchased on the secondhand market, given how difficult it is to actually be an initial purchaser from an authorized dealer these days. I hope they revisit this policy in the future.

Still may be worth a call to see what they say.

I don’t have any words of wisdom about why it may not be working perfectly, other than look at the joint carefully to see if there’s anything obviously in there like a burr. I wouldn’t say mine closes like the proverbial steel trap, but it does have a nice (though light) snap to it. My 73 is way more energetic but I wouldn’t call the 68 “bad” by any means.

The spring holds the blade open and closed. The knife is functional. Carry it. Use it. Fiddle with it. Work it over and over. Time will pass regardless, you my as well break it in real well. My guess is that it will resolve with use. Flushing it 2 times is not much of a go at it.

The only knife I've had that behaved that way was rubbing the liner slightly. I assume you've checked all that on yours, though.
It's a mechanical device... if it can physically go all the way "home" when nudged, then that means it's capable of it. So, there must be something slowing it down/stopping it at the last moment of travel..... either blade rub, or some trash in the joint.
If it was a factory defect, I don't think it would push down into place so easily, and remain there.
I suppose it could be a rough spot on the side of the blade in the pivot area, but that would be the last thing I'd check/suspect.

Interesting issue.... frustrating, but interesting....

Good advice. I’ll work at it a bit more and learn to appreciate

Yea I can’t figure it out. Weak close and stops but can be pushed down. I got some air and will try to flush it with oil and air this evening. See if that shakes something loose. Doesn’t feel like a blockage just a defect in the mechanism. The pen blade is much tighter while the main blade feels soft but locks up fine. A fine conundrum

The days of honor of us knife people takes a hit. Good thing my integrity is still intact that I won’t pass it off to another

I had a knife for 2 years that I always thought was just a bad knife. One day I opened it felt a little pop and a sliver of brass pops out. Now it's about as smooth as can be.

if you are really handy, you can even take it a part! some folks make it a pretty good side hustle, one guy i know of even went on to become a custom maker

I’m not but if can’t deal or fix it and GEC won’t take it back i would love a contact to send it to

If I keep my Pony oiled the action is okay. When I take it out of storage it is iffy untilI I re-oil. Best of luck.

It's a pretty knife and I enjoy owning it, but like all things it has it's own personality. It is also not the only knife I own and if it was I may or may not view it differently. I carry it it a small pocket slip that I made. At any rate I would recommend trying to use it and reflect from there. Good luck.
