The spear blade is just as broad as the #85,were it differs and I'm sure you can tell too.....the blade on the #79 remains full back to the bolster, whereas the #85 blade tapers back to the bolster..

Yes, a really useful shot Jim, many thanks. I have an 85 which i like but I still fear this new pattern is too heavy for me. Shame, that Calico Bone is their nicest introduction in a long while.

Regards, Will

Originally ordered a #79 in Natural Stag - and it was a gorgeous knife. Followed up with a Calico Bone version - and all I have to say is "Wow"

The Calico Bone is the perfect scale for this knife design.

Bumped for the blade comparison by Boggs of the 79's spear blade and the 85's spear blade.

Much thanks. Only other question I have is thickness of blade. The 79 is thick in comparison to the other blades. Is the 85's blade in the same thickness league as the 79? Thanks for all the info.

Jeff

Thank you sir. I love my 79! For work it cant be beat for my needs. I am looking for a non work edc and am not sure how I feel about the blade being thinner. Not a strong but then agaon lighter and a better slicer. More research is in order *sigh* I just hate looking up onives on the web :)

Thanks again for all the great info. I need to take a shot of my 79 agaon. Between the potatoe patina and work its looking really loved lately. Cant believe its not quite a month old yet.

All I know is I'm really liking mine, and the pocket carry is deceptively easy.... ;)

I had been looking daily and I finally found one in stag that I wanted. And the dealer met my requirements of showing the necessary angles in the photos. I was ready to pull the trigger... but it was sold while I was shopping! :p You gotta be quick! ;)

Which handle material do guys like best on this pattern? Ed, you've got them all --don't ya'?! ;) I was looking at the stag but I missed the one that I wanted... Now I'm leaning toward ebony... or possibly the micarta... but those are Tidioute and I like the Northwood swedges.... hmmm.... Any significant grind differences on the Tidioute and Northfield or is it just the swedges?

P.S. If the person who bought this knife has buyer's remorse, please contact me immediately! :D

Wow, that stag is beautiful!

I'm forcing a patina on my red dawn jigged bone version, I noticed a couple pepper spots on the clip and wharncliffe after taking it camping. I was wiping down the blades with a Tuf-Cloth too. As much as I like the handles on mine, I sorta wish I waited for the Calico Northfield, though I'm not sure if the blades are polished or not.

They aren't polished on the Calico one that I have. Same for the Ruby Red. I wish they were. By the pics of the Kingwood versions that I've seen I don't they they have full polished blades either. I wish they did. Not a deal breaker I suppose, but I've come to expect high polish on anything with a N'field stamp.
