gec acrylics

I really like the acrylic on the Exec Whittler
There again, I really like the Exec Whittler

I like the looks of some of the patterns. How does acrylic hold to everyday use? Does it scratch or crack?

Holds up pretty well.

The ones that I carry regularly have picked up some scratches, but they're very fine surface ones that are only noticeable if you're looking close (Same type of scratch happens on the metal bolsters, even though I don't have anything else in the pocket I carry in. What it'd look like living in a pocket with my keys or a flashlight... no idea).

I dropped a #53 stockman on pavement once. Dinged the bolster on one side, but the acrylic was unscathed.

neeman i only wish i could do photos like you guys. any time i post i usually take 4 or 5 pics to get one that is only average. i learned photography in the 60s when we were all about changing lenses, checking lite meters, setting focal length & chosing film speed . i may have to go back to the old school to make it decent. automatic is too complicated for me.

Gotta give GEC their props for their clever use of MOB(Mother of Brunswick). There sure is a lot of variety which is better for the consumer/collecter. YAY!

Nice collection! What's funny is that I LOVE the GEC acrylics, but still don't own any. I'm going to have to get off my duff and order one one of these days. Thanks for the pic!

Here's a different one, from 2007, with both color and pattern depth. Blue Oyster Acrylic Cuban Stockman.

Thaks for the reply. I also keep my knives in pockets without other metal, but scratches are inexorable, even for those carried inside leather sheeths.

Of all their acrylics I like blue denim the best, but you don't see that very often.

There's a two-blade #73 jack in denim on knifeswappers site that I've been eyein'. It's a darker blue than the oyster or the blue sapphire.

I thought GEC's "Blue Denim" was dyed smooth bone.

They had a run a couple years ago of "blue denim" acrylilc. Looked interesting, almost like a funky micarta, where there was a white weave pattern in the acrylic.

Is the one 4th from right on top the grits and molasses? Could I see some more of that one?

It is really simple
A cheap tripod
A 18% Grey level card ($5), it give a general reading for the light level and it evens out the shiny blade and darker scales

Camera on the tripod
Focus on the card just above the knife
Half press the shutter button (it takes the light reading)
Keep half pressed to keep the reading
Swing the camera down a little to see the knife
Fully press the shutter

The MOB (Mother of Brunswick) is close to some celloid
But does not smoke and perish
