GEC and Do You Really Like Them?

Lastmohecken--

I love that knife! Perfect size for me, I use the wharncliffe all the time, the shape is perfect... the handle material is first rate! Of the two dozen or so that I own, this is one of my favorite EDC's!!

I own 3 GEC knives - 1/2 Congress in stag, EZ-Open in brown jigged bone, and a Pemberton in ebony. All are very well made and exhibit very good fit & finish. The only flaw was that the pen blade on the 1/2 Congress sat up high and would snag you. Fixed that last week. If I had more funds at the moment I'd own at least 2 more GEC knives - a Toothpick (single clip blade), and the Norfolk in light ebony.

Everyone that sees one of my GEC knives always makes favorable comments - even non-knife people. This is a good thing in my office as the rules on knife carry are vague. Good friend is a watch repairman and has 3 GEC knives too, with plans for more. He works on high dollar watches and has an excellent eye for detail. When he praises a knife I pay attention.

I like certain ones, right now admittedly the Campagna SFO's. But I find I also only like a certain blade on a certain frame. I guess I should sell the ones that tend to stay in the tube. That's why I would sell a knife - if I really found I didn't "appreciate" it the way someone else might. And if I didn't have someone to gift it to...

I think Ed's point is that we tend yo get an influx of people who come in and start a new GEC thread on every GEC knife they purchase or buy instead of posting in one of the existing threads where it would fit.

Or every GEC knife they're thinking of buying, or their friend's thinking of buying, or their dog's thinking of buying! ;)

Charlie, Jeff, Ed, Sarah and to everyone who have so thoughtfully and intelligently contributed to this thread I give you a heartfelt Thank You. I had no idea that the responses would come as they have. These are the kinds of discussions that got me interested in the BF Tradionals Forum originally.

Thanks All!!!

For my part, you're certainly welcome. I've found the discussion illuminating as well.

Perhaps outside the scope of this thread, but I'm still interested to know more about what you mean by,
I am of the belief that there are many other topics and makers we could be discussing that would enrich all of us....

Do you have specific topics and makers in mind, or is yours more a general impression that the pace and thread content of the last couple of years* has pushed out other content and discussions (and possibly participants?) that you found valuable at an earlier time?

* A guessed-at time frame, because I've not been here longer.

No need for "official" threads for each pattern. Just because one poster asked a question, we don't need to redesign the entire forum.

Sounds like a situation where an "Official GEC #XX Thread" for each knife might be useful.

Such a format would likely only occur if GEC decided they wanted their own forum. The decision to have a separate GEC Forum would be made by GEC, not BladeForums. The moderation of Traditional already requires more tweaks to content than most other forums do in order to maintain its environment. I don't think increased regimentation is an answer.

I agree with Frank!! Keep it as is!
Thanks for the work you already do, Frank!!

So we agree? No more whining about GEC knives?:D

Well, I'm glad we talked about this! Some important stuff came up!
But let's have a sticky on how to use the search function. It sure doesn't get along with me! It would save us from repetitive GEC threads for instance!!

Im confused by the word Traditional. Is there an official definition?

I can certainly understand someone being a bit chagrinned arriving here wishing to discuss pre WW2 traditional knives, only to be overrun by posts about modern knives.

The term "Modern" Traditional is a distinction that could be made, IF we wanted to direct all the Modern traffic to a different area than the Antique Traditionals.

imo, GEC discussion in the Traditional forum, has created an opportunity for people who do not have a collection of pre WW2 traditionals, to enter into a dialogue with people who do.

It does feel funny to me, to be posting pics of a knife made this year, in a Forum titled "Traditional", but I appreciate the leeway, and the opportunity to learn from others.

roseskunk,

Thanks, for the reply, the wharncliffe blade is one of the main reasons I decided to order one of these, that and I like the size. A couple of more days and maybe I will get to hold it in my hand.

Hi Jon,
The easiest thing is to look at the subheading under the TRADITIONAL FORUM headline:

Forum: Traditional Folders and Fixed Blades
Discussion of classic Hunters, Trappers, Lockbacks, Slipjoints, Skinners and other classic designs

Gary and I work pretty much within the guidelines developed by Blues and Bastid, the original moderators of the Traditional Forum. Under those guidelines, we consider a knife "traditional" based on design rather than on materials of construction or when the knife was made. "Current Production", "Antique", or "Custom" makes no difference. Materials of construction don't make much difference.

Design features do make a difference. Pocket clips, thumb studs, or modern locks won't pass muster for folders, nor will modern design features on fixed blades such as glass breakers.

I'm new and the concept was different to me.

Dang auto correct makes my posting look like I was drunk.
