GEC and Traditional Knife Buttons/Pins

If you are the type of person who buys the knife, takes it out of the tube and drop it in your pocket, and throw all the rest away; then I agree all the extra stuff is pointless.

If you are a collector, having the tube in nice condition, and the pin, and a CoA, are all extremely important to have along with the knife. It is a complete package.

It is just 2 different mindsets, depending on what your intentions are for buying the knife.

I like that - 'extremely important', and 'quite disappointed'...yeah, that's it.

I'm a collector of the knives AND pins, and I'll be damned if I didn't just buy another GEC knife WITHOUT the pin in there. That's the 4th one without.
Strike 3, GEC.

I've had enough of a company that shows the knives with the pins and then doesn't include them for everyone. Utterly, stupidly RIDICULOUS.

I guess it saves them a lot of cash to short-shrift most of them. But they won't be getting any more of my cash. I wonder what idiot came up with this.

I really didn't start this thread to be used as a vehicle for GEC bashing.
The pins are not included in all runs. There were no 14 pins from the recent run or the 85 run. When they do include pins, they only put it in one of every four tubes. The odds are such that you could buy many GECs and not get a single pin. All reasons why they are a treat when we do get them.

I am not bashing, I love GEC, The 2013 Pembertons got me into traditional knives, my new stag and crusades acrylic Templar are totally spot on. The artwork on the templar tube is incredible.

No, I am...'extremely disappointed'.

I apologize for using 'idiot', but its is an extremely idiotic practice, IMO.

I certainly do know they don't put them in all the knives, even ones that feature them in their promo pics.

I don't think the 56 dogleg jacks in Mardi Gras were 1 in 4? Or the coyotes, or the Navy knives with 3 different ones. Seems like they just started ninny-hammering on the pins, also.

I may start a thread in GB&U, and move the posts there if the pin complaints continue.

The only pin I have is the one from the 2018 Rendezvous. But I think it is cool, and look forward to getting another at the 2019 show, and hopefully a few others in knife tubes if I am lucky.

Both my Templars today had buttons! Very stoked to put them in the display case I have for GEC buttons.

I promise, I am trying to figure out pics. I have a lot of logistics to overcome in that area unfortunately.

Awesome! If you need help with the photos let me know.

I’d like to see a photo of the Templar pin just so that I can see what I missed again, lol.

Has there *ever* been a 14 pin? I haven’t seen one from the first run either.
I'm not sure...haven't seen one before. There were stories from Lyle that came with some of the 14's perhaps that was why.

Check out the "Just Finished" tab on the GEC page and there is a pic of the Templar button.

The first run of 14 barlows had a button that specified the "14", the button with the clip point barlows just said "genuine Sawyer Barlow".

Nice ones all, and I really like that Oregon Trapper!
Finally I'm back to Imgur this weekend, so here is the Possum.

I really wish I had gotten one of these with my Possum Skinner.

Those are some strong feelings about pins! But I do get it, when a collector buys a knife they want the full package and GEC doesn't seem that Interested in ensuring that. I think it's part of Bill's philosophy probably.

I hope my #97 comes with one.

I love how they show the knives with them.

I got some very nice email replies from GEC on this, they do not include them in every tube, unless a SFO dealer pays for them to be in every one.

Still, showing the knives with the pin should mean you get one,
not 'look what you could have gotten with yours if you'd been one of the lucky ones.'

Its a silly thing, but its put me off buying any more. I've had enough bad surprises for a lifetime. Also rather ironic that the company that got me into traditionals is the one that got me out too.

2018 14 run only had buttons with the cobblestones, all had one. Generic to JSR, my guess is they were added by Jamie.

You just reminded me that I have a JSR pin and totally forgot! I think youre right though Jamie likely added those.

I've talked to Bill a few years back, and he isn't shy about his feelings that he doesn't understand knife collectors. He fully believes that every knife he makes is a tool that will be put to work.

And I fully believe that he believes that :) It is the reason why quality is so high. I also believe he understands us collectors though... it is the reason he goes the extra mile. Would love to chat with Bill one day

Yep. I think he always seems to enjoy seeing how well used some of my GECs are, and he asked if I was gonna use my stag #82 that I called about recently.
