GEC Bullnose

Does anyone have the bail for the Bullnose? I'm looking into getting one and am wondering if it gets in the way of the blade closing.

I have the bail installed in mine, and if you are not careful the blade can close on it. I have done this once since sharpening it and the blade suffered an almost imperceptible dent in the edge that stropped out, while leaving a noticeable notch in the bail. It seams the bails are made soft enough to keep from really damaging the edge in the event that this happens.

Stu, thanks for the pic.
I have to say I really like the look of the bail, but I am not sure how useful it would really be.
I have plans on using mine quite a bit, but I think the bail could get a little uncomfortable after a while, I could be wrong though.

I just stuck a piece of paracord through the lanyard whole on mine. It is now hanging on the peg board down in my shop.

Thanks, FLymon!

I really like the look of that bail - gives the knife a dressed down look, which is what I want. Might be worth the trouble.

And buying a bail gives me an excuse to pick up another knife from Mike.

I love the lanyard hole on the Bullnose, but I don't think I care for the looks of the bail on these. I have a lanyard run through the tube on mine, and it's good to go. The bail looks to add a layer of complexity to what is a beautifully simple, elegant knife.

Silly question, but are any of the Bullnose knives available anywhere? Just getting into traditionals and really like the looks of this one. I fear a may be a day late and a dollar short on this one though.....

Only in the exchange. They were a limited run and sold out very quickly. A few have shown up so far, so if you're patient you could get lucky.

I'm almost positive they will do more runs of this knife. They have tooling to do so.

You could pick up a stainless or Carbon Case sodbuster to hold you over during the wait.

Thats what I'm gonna have to do. I just wish case made a CV soddie in the black delrin! oh well i guess if I go for one of those instead it'll save me a little dough

It's arrived! The first in the UK!

Well this knife has brought a smile to my face:) Better than expected, great F&F, no play and centered blade. Nice to see little details I had missed online like the fine swedging of the blade. Comfy handle but the 01 steel is the real clincher. Have gently re profiled the edge with a convex bevel (my only complaint would be the poor edge with a ding near the tip where someone has slipped and not bothered to put it right). Still, once sharp it takes a great edge and after 30 min's working quite hard with green wood it still push cuts through newsprint. That's impressive!

Great knife:)

Sound great to me Sam. To address your comment on the sloppy edge...I have notice that around the time GEC stated they changed their honing process I started getting knives that were sharper but had spotty edges. I went through my collection yesterday just to polish them all up and check on them in storage and the old ones all have dull edges but very consistent and much better to my eyes. I know a lot of people want their knives to come sharp, but I would rather it comes with a decent yet well executed bevel that I can work with myself. Sometimes those sloppy areas can make you have to remove more steel then just getting a good dull edge from the start. IMHO.

Glad you like it!

With you on that one, it's as if the person putting the edge bevel on slipped at the last minute! I've noticed a couple of GEC's like that. Did think about continuing until it was sharpened out but it is about 2mm back from the tip so felt that the tip was sharp as is the belly (something I'm pleased with myself for as i'm still getting my head around free hand sharpening and re profiling:)) so would let it come over time. Managed to balance out the uneven bevel too.

Superb steel though

Sam

Very nice Sam :)

I have noticed something like you are saying on 90 percent of the GEC's (that I have received) since they said they made the change. Its just like you said, it looks like the slipped and dug in to deep for a moment and just kept going and said whatever.

Either way, my bullnose came like that even though you can't see it in the pics. It took me a while to work it out, but I did just like you and figured I had enough sharp edge to work with for now :)

I think that will end up as one of your favorites.

I've been using mine almost exclusively for the last three weeks, I love the way it rides in my jeans pocket.

I had no trouble using a Sharpmaker on mine.
I used the 15° per side setting, because I wanted to see if the blade would take it. So far, so good.

I just did this to mine. The edge seemed thick out of the box (tube). MUCH better results at 15-degs per side. Thanks Frank!

I've been using mine quite a bit and it's right at par with the original orange one. It even beats the few flaws that the orange one had.
The black is a more traditional color for this type of knife, IMO. I really enjoy how this knife feels in the pocket and how it feels in the hand. It's a great work knife with some awesome steel.

What I like best about this knife? So many people are actually using them! That says a lot.

Myself included, and for good reason. One of my best buys in a while, it has pretty much taken over the EDC role.
