GEC is Growing Up!

the more i like it, it's different
ya know this is crazy but i wouldnt be opposed to this one as the BFC 2010 knife... it's different and memorable, maybe bone or ebony:)
Beautiful knife

Well, we haven't voted on the knife yet, Ivan. Just depends on how many are interested.
I agree, with ebony or blackwood, and this shield, it would be a killer knife!
I like the acrylic because it symbolizes a step toward a new version of Candystripe without the risks!!;) :D

It's a very serious looking knife too, like it means business, the rakish blade, the long slender profile, the threaded bolsters, almost begs to have some darker handle material... Definitely Exotic
yeah i'm liking this one way too much:D
man i need to leave this thread ASAP!

the acrylic is cool would not be opposed to that at all:D maybe darker color
Yeah this thing is gonna haunt me till i get one:D

I think if they had not made the master blade so dang pointy and slim, that knife would have been darn near perfect for a production whittler. Other than that, it looks like and impressive knife.

How thin did they get the cutting edges? (I know you have a micrometer, Charlie ;) )

Just measure it at the edge somewhere where you can get a squeeze with the mic...just behind the edge bevel

I've had my eye on that exact same knife for a while now, but I've been a little bit on the fence on the pattern ever since it was introduced. The melon whittler is the only GEC pattern I don't own yet. But Waynorth's pictures have answered my questions, and finally pushed me over the edge.

Gee, thanks for costing me $92! :D:thumbup:

Charlie, how would you name the master blade ? "Wharncliffish" ?
i think it looks ideal as a package opener. if they bring out a version # 2 as a lockback, then it would be a S.D. qualifier as well.

Oh wow. That main blade is amazing. 1095 as well? Looks like I'll have to keep that one on my wish list.

Yes, it's an old pattern that used to have a spearpoint main, and GEC made them that way. Look for the Tidioute models; the early production ones were with the first style blade. Supposedly, no more of those will be made.

I'm mainly impressed by how exactly they copied the old originals' construction details -- all the dimensions and parts look to be dead on, as is the hafting. Nice bit of work from GEC - not an easy pattern to do right.

I admire the shield on that, really augments a slim pattern.

Impressive is the acrylic too, would look even better in 'Tortoise'

I recall hearing that early models had a spear type mainblade but this was quickly dropped due to certain production problems. The wedged double backspring perhaps? Mind you my RR Old Yellow Whittler has one and it's just right:D

Kerry, measured just behind the nail pull, and below the swedge, it goes from .075 to .014 over a span of 5/16". Does that do it for you?

It looks like a Wharncliffe to me, Roland, albeit a slim one. I've never seen parameters or specs for a Wharncliffe. I just assume if it has a straight edge, and the spine arches giving an acute point, then that's what it is.

Now, what does an S.D. qualifier mean?

Nice work. I too agree with dark wood. Ebony with ns liners on that knife would be ultimate eye candy for me.
