GEC Lumberjack Photo

After watching the YouTube video above, i'm now interested, but before going ahead i would like to know how well the saw works. No point in the extra bulk if the saw is not an effective cutter. The teeth don't look to be offset so i wonder if it tends to bind ? Are there any posts about using the saw blade ?

Ok, it arrived a little while ago and I took a few quick pics. This certainly is a massive knife but I kinda thought it would be bigger still :). Holding the knife with the spear open is very comfortable and the blade is one of the sharpest I've gotten from GEC. The micarta has a nice feel to it, not too polished. I can't say it is as comfortable with the saw open as the spear blade does stick out a bit. Perhaps it would feel better with work gloves on? And if I file down the kick a bit? I didn't get a chance to use the saw, not sure I have any wood to use it on either. I also took some quick comparison pics with a #25 and a #73 I had out.

I have mixed feelings about the knife, though it is tempting in a weird way, but I can say without hesitation that you have the most nicely man-icured hands I've seen in a long time. :D

LOL :D I'm a cube monkey so they don't get too messed up. I really have no need for this knife but it called to me and I had to get it.

That blade's thick! Hatchet thick:eek::D
It is... but because the blade is so wide it comes down to a thin edge and is really sharp. And remembering the history of that style blade, it basically was a pocket hatchet.

Gotta be a joke. Preliminary April Fool's joke? The shield is on up-side-down and somebody cut silly looking notches in that funny looking, linerlock, looks like a screwdriver blade, blade. What a mess.

The above quote was my reaction to the Lumber Jack knife in post #8 of this thread. Well, I was 3/4 wrong and overly harsh. The video Ash provided puts the knife in a pleasing light and the pictures taken by Trand highlight the knife even better. Although it is an attractive knife it isn't my cup of tea but not a bad looking knife at all. The micarta covers look good.

Nice pictures Trand. Thanks for posting them.

Is that supposed to be...a ripsaw??? I'm sorry, and maybe I'm wrong, but that looks like a sorry excuse for a saw. Maybe someone will test it out and report back that I was way off the mark, but there's neither set nor angle to the teeth. Looks like it'll be prone towards chattering and clogging. :o

Nice photos! It's a neat showpiece.

The saw looks like it was designed more for show than use but one possibility regarding the teeth not being set: if it's supposed to similar to the the old cross cut saw on the shield, the teeth would be straight (unlike a carpentry saw). But the profile isn't right for a cross cut saw. I'm thinking it's just for show.

For some odd reason this pattern realy strikes a cord with me however I think GEC messed it up pretty good seeing as the saw looks pretty dull and useless but still it's a very cool/unique pattern that would make one heck of a show piece.

Trand, maybe you could find a tree or bush and try sawing off a branch of about 1/2-1" diameter. I agree, the picture of the saw teeth makes it look like it won't saw. But surely GEC would not put a useless blade on a knife ?
Only way to know is to try it on a few green branches and on some small diameter dry lumber. If it does actually saw through, i will be surprised enough to buy one.

I'd agree about the saw, even if it were usable by design it is made from 1095, the same as the blade meaning you'd have to sharpen it every so often. That looks like a fiddle.... Having said that I'm quite liking the look of the single blade version...

I might want to keep one in my john boat. If the battery for my trolling motor dies, and I can make it to shore, I can use the saw to cut down a sapling. Then I can tie the knife to one end and use it to paddle out. ;)

I may not be able to do so today Roland but I'll definitely try tomorrow afternoon. I'm sure some of the neighbor's bushes are over the line in the back yard. I had some downed cherry tree branches (up to 3-4" diameter) in the basement but I think they may have been thrown out already.

Great, i, and i'm sure many others, really want to know what happens. Do you have a USA Schrade 97OT or a Schlieper 99S ?
Both have saw blades that work extremely well, better than any other knife saw blade. Both are 1095 too and don't need resharpening because you're not sawing stuff every day or you'd carry a real saw.
Anyway, a comparison test would be the ultimate, although not necessary if initial testing of the GEC says something like "10 minutes and an aching arm to saw through a 3/4" branch", which is what i expect to hear.
