GEC Made-Schrade Cut Co.-#73 Pattern

Also, I didn't know GEC OEM'd for other brands like that! Very interesting.

They actually do it quite a bit. The most common brands that GEC is making for are Hess Knifeworks fixed blades and many of the Northwoods slipjoints. They've also made knives for JBF Champlin, Bulldog, and Tuna Valley Cutlery among others.

They make the Smith & Sons Mudbug as well. Which, if I might add, is a very nice knife.

Back to topic at hand, I wonder if they could release their own version of this, or does Schrade own the patent rights to the design?

My understanding is that 'Autos' are not legal to carry or own, so likely not legal to manufacture. This is why the secrecy as to how to acquire one, and why a manufacturer would not have any reference to these on their website.
If i am wrong about this, then please correct it.

Well, given that many major manufacturers produce them, they're definitely not illegal to manufacture (at least in the US), and they're legal public carry in Oklahoma and many other places.

They just became legal here in Wisconsin. I'll be watching to see if I can't detect when more are released, since this is pretty much the only auto that I've ever seen that piques my curiosity.

They're legal to own but not carry in several states, including Pennsylvania. (As dumb as not being legal to carry them is, at least they can be owned)

I believe GEC ran 73's in 2015, can anyone confirm this?
If true, and we can't find reference that any of these Schrades were produced in the last run, perhaps the line is done-extinct. Who know when GEC would run 73's again.

According to the dealer that put the SFO together this is "done-extinct". I have a full copy of the brochure I will post up when I have time..

I had my camera and knives out for pictures of the recent 85 run so I snapped a couple of my kingwood auto 1 of 30, 2012. I left the bloodwood 85 in for size/color reference.

For anyone interested, here's a demonstration of the mechanism on one (a fatty stag!):

Forgot to post pics back in this thread. I managed to snag one of these from a forum member who saw my posts and had one to offer!

Another piece of great news is that it's legal to carry autos in Texas these days! I missed that legislation I guess because it didn't apply to me when it was passed but it's awesome that I can carry this sucker without fear of repercussions!

I don't have facts, but seems like over the past couple years there's more places it's legal to carry than illegal... just a guess without doing a bunch of google research on it. It's legal in Missouri..

I'm glad you got one. They are a bit hard to come by...

That smooth bone is magnificent. Great score!

AKTI.ORG is the free website that will tell you about the legality of knives in your particular circumstances. Excellent information.

I believe there's a video on YouTube by muskrat man knives showing it being deployed. They look sweet! I've never had my hands on one. I've seen them go for a pretty penny on that auction site.

Trand, how smooth are these? Do they open with authority? The springs on a 73 are stiff so I would imagine that they have a pleasantly satisfying kick upon deployment.

Maybe someday.

Mine is very smooth. The spring is not a 73 spring though. The only thing "73" about the knife is the shape... The spring itself is just enough to get the blade fired out and the there is a light lock spring that engages the tang of the blade. When you hit the unlock lever, the blade will almost drop free under its own weight until you hit the spring that fires the blade. Just a push to overcome this spring and it locks shut using the same tang lock.

Nice smooth bone Schrade!!

Brandon, Jfowl31 covers it mostly. These are the only autos I've ever had but I do think they open with authority. There is a different spring design so don't look at a #73 slip joint as an indicator on how easily the auto opens or closes.
