GEC Maverick???

Looks like they've got some more pictures up

I'm not sure how I feel about the offset shield, I was hoping for a centered one

I've heard it said that on their thinner frames, a centered shield leaves too little room between it and the center pin, i.e. scale cracking.

Does this apply to single-spring patterns though? The Conductor and W.Owl have centre shields.

Not all the Conductors do. The GEC ones do not but then the acorn shape isn't the same as the hotdog. I haven't heard of cracking issues with GECs on any of the forums. They certainly were centered before.

It looks like the clip blade is rather short. I was holding out on buying a GEC 61 half-congress until I saw what this 62 Maverick looked like. And while it looks like a very nice knife, for me I think the benefit of having it be one layer thick (61 half-congress) vs two layers for that short clip has yielded an answer.

I also see that the clip is rather short. I was interested in the pattern, but with a blade that short on a frame that long, it doesn't appeal to me. With 2 backsprings I figure they should have been able to make the clip blade fairly long.

Confucius37: That was exactly my hope for this knife. In a way I'm glad. Now I can go grab the 62 I've been eyeing.

I hope they can bring the sheepsfoot down some, they have plenty of room. If not then I will have to pass, not comfortable for my hands.

When I first spyed the Maverick I hoped for a Congress Jack, though this one looks interesting. I'll be watching since I really like the courthouse whittler.

Another GEC on the list, just when I thought it was safe with only the Outlaw jack left... :D

I still hope they make a Scout and a Peanut!

Zippo fan, I'd also like a congress jack... hopefully with a wrap around spring though I don't remember GEC using a wrap around spring on any of their jacks. I want it mainly just because it's an interesting pattern but functionally I think a single spring half congress is a more efficient design since it doesn't leave any empty space. I think the blades will probably fill the well in this congress/cattle...er... uh... congr-attle knife. One of my favorite Cases is the humpback stockman which also has a big curve (and a hump, of course!) so I think I may like this "maverick" pattern.

Will, The joints do look semi sunk! Good to see!

Jeff,

Here's an example of a wrap around spring (circled). The other knife has an empty space in the well... which is where loose change gets stuck... well... then it's no longer an empty space. ;)

Here's a Case Swayback Jack as an example of a sunk joint (circled). No sharp edges on that knife except the blades. Sunk joints were a feature of all the original Robeson Pocket-eze knives... though not the Queen-made reproductions.

Jake I thank you for the quick reference. I was right in my guess as to the wrap around spring, I like that little feature. The sunken joint is a duhh now that I see a comparison. I am a fan of them both.

Since we are getting technical in those top view picks, you can see the middle liner running between the two blades. I know it is needed to space the blades apart as its function, but why does it have to be full height down the middle? I would like to see these cut to follow the contour of the springs in the bottom, just would look better to me anyway. I am sure it is either their for a reason or been done on more rare patterns :)

It's certainly easier to clean the inside of knives with a cut out center scale. Some knives like the Buck 301 don't have one at all. Sorry but I don't know of the reason for the center scale being the same size... maybe it has something to do with streamlining the manufacturing... dunno.

....

Here are some pictures of old and new 301s.

Looks like most people didnt get the Bosses memo. Thanks again for the help Jake, it is appreciated.

Tony, was referring to an old Eureka pattern with three springs, like the Buck 301 and GEC Workhorse Whittler (which also lack center scales). But the potato comment makes me smile. ;)

It looks like the Maverick will have a cut center scale:

Hopefully, the tips won't be exposed on the final knives.
