GEC Shields

I believe they called the one in the 2014 forum knife a "houndstooth"

Pretty terrible shot of this shield but it's the only picture I have of this knife on my phone

The "Tidioute" shield above also appears without the "Tidioute," as in the middle example here:

Make of that what you will. :D

Also, GEC's own name for the "cloud" shield is Keyhole.

In the in-progress pictures where one can read the notes, I've noticed the annotation, "small keyhole" for this whittler

Do any of the constructionaries among us know what this signifies?

It's what most folks call the "Cloud" Inlay Shield. The Factory calls this shield"keyhole" most collectors call it the "Cloud". It's one of the regular Northfield Shields.

They are likely the only ones who call it that!

This went from "the Short Run shield" to "Oh, okay: the Saints shield" to now being referred to as the Fleur-de-lys.

It's one of my very favorites.

Sarah, I like the gimp variety in your last photos, but they put the large end at the small end of plk7's #25 jack. It seems to me it would flow better reversed, but maybe they needed the room to get around the spring pin.

That could be, but I think it's far more likely they simply orient the head of the gimp towards the main blade on each pattern, regardless of frame taper.

(Suddenly unclear if it's okay to say, "Orient the head of the gimp" in this subforum. :D)

I want to belive GEC monitors this place or at least checks in from time to time. :D That said, give us some new, unique, & interesting shields & keep up the great work.

Don't think this one's been added yet. It was also used on some of the knives made for Bulldog, if I'm not mistaken.

There's also the 'Schrade' shields from the Fire and Ice knives. I think the Galvanic Eureka Jacks had a unique shield as well.

I think many of the longer braid or propeller or bow tie shields can properly be called variations of gimps.

From Webster 's.

Definition of gimp
: an ornamental flat braid or round cord used as a trimming

Unfortunately if you google gimp you get pages of results about the open source software , Gimp. Not real helpful.

JustinR has a Bradford SFO on the exchange. It's a 73 with a single shot etch and bullet as a shield.
