GEC's jigged bone

Beautiful pix guys.
Not to hijack the thread, but what is the tool on this one called?
It's shaped like an awl, but what are the two flutes for?

Here's Charile's thread where he introduced it. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/897742-Another-Son-of-Bladeforums-85-or-HJ5!!?

Its not actually new or designed by GEC. Charlie linked the 1908 patent drawings in this post.

Here are a few others, I'll be honest in that I'm not sure of all their correct names.

I believe this is just green bone. I do like the tight pattern

Trand, with the Tractor Green they would never call it Winterbottom, since everyone else in the industry DOES.

And I just noticed that the Red Wine (not the horsecut red wine) has the same jigging (different color) as the
Green Tea bone that Jake showed in post #1.

I don't think we have a pic of this jigging pattern yet, on the Burnt Orange jigged bone #72.

And although all their other yellow bones are smooth, they did a run of jigged Yellow Rose bone on the #53s
that is just a little different from others.

Well now, that's different now, isn't it? ;)

When it comes to similar (or even identical) jigging patterns or colors and the naming thereof, I wonder if there is any method to GEC's madness, or if it doesn't occur to them that their "new" color/pattern/result looks so close to a previous one they can use the same name...?

Or that a new application of a previously-used jigging design will scale in such a way as to look quite different, and warrant a new name?

Finally, in examples such as this:

GEC evidently calls this "green tea stained." How does one go about identifying the jigging pattern?

Hmm, that looks familiar... I'm not sure what the jigging pattern is but that one is actually "Standard Green Tea" as per the tube. You can see how standard it is with my other 2...

They made 185 Green Tea pieces in 2007 which I believe are the standard ones. There are also 105 2007 Stained Green Tea and 75 2006 Rogers Green Tea. Here is a Horsecut Stained Green Tea #53

The #53 became my green micarta #53 and the last #73 pictured above is now wearing blue jeans.

Yep, which is why I hesitated to call it that myself... They also made it with red bone. The #73 is very similar to the other but on my example at least, it seems to have been polished a bit more. The hills of the jigging isn't as sharp as on the green teas.

Jake, I believe the Brimstone bone IS the same as Queen's ACSB. They only used it in '07 and '08, when they were sourcing their bone from the same outfit that Queen uses, Culpepper's. I'm pretty sure they do their bone "in house" now, so probably no more Brimstone bone.

Thanks, Jeff! Is the Green Tea also from Culpeppers?

I hadn't recognized it until the Copperhead jig bone was described as "random" by biglmbass and Flymon but I think my preference is for the "random" jig patterns.

Jake, I'm not 100% sure, but believe that all GEC's bone from 2006-2008 was out-sourced, and probably from Culpepper's.

Notice that any color/jiggings that were revisited from 2009 on look different than the original.
Some that come to mind are Appaloosa bone, Grizzly Cut bone and Antique Green bone, shown below.

Hunh. I thought I'd taken that picture and description directly from wintermute's post describing the 2012 BF knife:

"Scale Material & Color: Bone (see attached photo titled Bone.jpg for COLOR ONLY!!!! - GEC calls this 'Green Tea Stained')"

But maybe I grabbed it from elsewhere, and got the two mixed up (they look so much alike!).

Are you saying this is "Standard," too, and not "stained"? It's the picture referenced in wintermute's post:

As for the rest, I am now completely confused, instead of just a little bit.

However, I'm enjoying the pictures very much, so please keep them coming. :)

Pert, Yep, its from the 2012 Forum knife description. I'm happy to have contributed the original pic :) It's tube is the first one in my group shot. Jake had nominated it as the bone color and I'm sure Manfred took a copy in case something happened with the original link.

As for stained, standard, or rogers, not really sure what makes each different. I think standard and stained are the same except stained has naturally darker spots in the bone. I don't recall seeing one of the Rogers ones.

I am interested to see how the bone comes out. Those #73 trappers were made in 2007, black mamba mentioned that GEC used to outsource their bone, but now they do their own dying and jigging, so I assume we can expect a slightly different (hopefully even better) result for the jigging and dying.

If the Copperhead Jig Bone on the #42 lockback is anything to go by then I reckon it's a given. My favourite yet:)

Thank you, Jeff.

Jake had nominated it as the bone color...

The color will be the Green tea but the jigging will be different... if the original green tea was from Culpepper's, they might not be able to reproduce the exact color and jigging. I think the jigging will be similar to Charlie's last harness jack. As Sam said, if the copperhead jig bone is any indication of GEC's ability, se can expect some really good stuff from them.

Rose, I didn't realize they did the Trader with the copperhead jig bone also -Nice! I'm hoping to see a lot more patterns with the stuff!
