General Blade Design (Benchmade and Spyderco) -- Post your thoughts--

The 940 is a nice blade but not a good comparison to the pm2 it has a totally different blade design. Had the 940 and replace it with a 943. But please compare comparable things. Like the barrage.

This is what I was trying to point out on page 1 of this thread.......unfair comparison.
OP used the blade shape of the 940 as a blanket statement of BM's blade designs.
Barrage, 665 or 761 would've made a much better comparison.
Unless I'm reading it wrong.....which is quite possible!!

Very different design for different use. Some people do cutting and slicing, some do digging, sticking and cutting. For slicing and cutting the point is best kept fine. For diggings, sticking and cutting then the point had better have some steel behind it.

Both companies cater for the different styles of use.

As far as aesthetics go, I prefer Benchmade 1000 times over spyderco. I find Spydercos to be really ugly as a matter of fact. As far as usability goes, I find both are very good and are comparable to one another.

Another item to keep in mind is the angle at which the blade needs to be positioned in order for the point to penetrate. Spyderco is notorious for allowing a low angle point penetration. Having the belly, like on a 940, is great for sweeping motion cuts. For example, skinning game. Whereas many of the spyderco's give great EDC function with the point. This isn't really a plus or minus. Just another item to consider when making a comparison. I'll post a pic when I get a chance.

Thanks- I'd love to see the picture! I totally get what you mean about the sweeping cuts. My spyderco can open a box with the first 5 mm of the blade!

My main goal is trying to compare the most popular benchmade vs most popular spyderco. They are way different blades, and that's exactly why I wanted to compare them.

Sorry, didn't mean to come across rude. It is true that the 940 is rather popular, and with its own merit, but the cutting is wastly different.
Both benchmade and spyderco do make excellent blade shapes. Personally... I switch :p
Gotta add though, I use my knives for cutting only so slicing is my primary concern.

No worries. I only cut too. I'd have a heart attack trying to pry something open with a knife. They're too nice to pry with!! I would definitely change my perspective though if I was in the wilderness haha
