I'm looking for a general camp knife. I have a SAK, but I need a larger fixed knife to supplement it. I'd be using it for the usual backwoods stuff: some wood chopping, batoning, rope cutting, food prep, you know, the good stuff.

I do not get to spend as much time outdoors as I would like. When I do get to go out, I take the time to bring along some gear to test out. I started with a 4 inch fixed blade (my Wally World special). What I learned was that the blade size was not practical for what I wanted to do, which is harvest wood for a campfire and general camping chores, i.e. rope cutting, whittling, making poles for a shelter.
I next tried a Gerber Gator pocket ax. The whole this is 8 inches long, weighs a pound, carries on my belt and has a 3 inch cutting surface. Bingo! I can not only harvest fire wood by chopping, I can baton with it, cut with it, scrape with it, dig with it, pry with it and generally any rough use I care to put it through. I can hold it like an ulu and make kindling. I can use the back part as a hammer. The more I use it, the more uses I find for it.
I understand that some guys even field dress game with it, although I have not tried that. I carry a small honing rod to keep the edge sharp. For fine work, I carry a SAK huntsman. I used to carry a pruning saw as well, but I am finding that with practice, the hatchett and SAK saw get the job done. I also carry a buck 110, but find that I use that the least after my pocket ax and SAK. I am thinking about adding an opinel folding saw.
I guess the point is to list all your applications and then find the tools that work best for you.
