General use outdoor fixed blade

how secure are those? and is there somewhere you can get one with a belt loot/snap secure on it?

You can google .... Spec-ops small combat master.

There are several other makers that hang out in the Swamp Rat and Busse sub-forums. Ask over there and you'll get several responses.

But a well made Kydex rig will be plenty secure.

The one I linked to you is a good sheath at a good price .... he might put a snap closure on one for you.

Chuddy Bear, Rainwalker and Leatherman make great stuff.

The Ratmandu is currently my favorite knife in that size. I just looked at a Nimravus a few days ago and was not impressed. An SRK in Aus8 for that close to the price of the Ratmandu or S1 is a joke - no offense meant, it may be a perfectly fine knife (it's not in my opinion based on things I've seen posted over the years), but there is no way it's in the same class as the RMD or the S1.

Based on how impressed I am with the F1 I just got, the S1 will be the next mid-size knife I buy. So IMO get the S1 or the Ratmandu. You can get a nice kydex sheath with a tek lok for $40 from azwelke for the Rat. Either one is better quality than the SRK.

Don't know about you, but I'd rather have AUS8 than VG10 in a hard use knife. And with a price difference of $90 the choice is clear.

Hell, you could get two SRKs - one in VG1 and the other in AUS8 for the price of a single S1.

I emailed that guy about doing a custom sheath. We'll have to wait and see what he says. I was wondering, how tall is the blade on the RMD, measuring perpendicularly to the overall length, from the actual blade to the tang? I know the BK2 is around 1 3/4", with an OAL around 10 3/4". The main reason I was looking at such a knife as the S1 was that it wasn't as tall, or long, as the Bk2, and is thus lighter. The RMD is around the same OAL as the BK2, right?

The steel for the SRK San Mai and the Fallkniven S1 are made by the same people in the same factory.

VG-1 is tougher than VG-10 ... VG-10 holds a better edge than VG-1.

The SRK should be tougher and the S1 a better slicer.

Especially considering the secondary grinds full convex vs. flat saber with a bevel.

Value in them depends on how you will use the knife.

Nothing wrong with the AUS8 in the standard SRK.

VG-1 still holds an edge pretty good though, right? I mean, I'm not going to be chopping down entire trees, or carving a canoe. What do you mean by "tougher." It won't chip, dent, or break as easily?

My RMD is 1 3/8" right in front of the choil and 10 3/8" long.

The blade is thinner ... (3/16") than the Becker but it has Micarta or G-10 slabs .... I'd think it would still be lighter but don't have a weight on the RMD.

Boy, that RMD seems so much like the BK2, only SLIGHTLY smaller. The SRK has a longer blade, and seems more like the longer A1 than the S1-size I'm looking for. Really, the only thing that keeps me from buying the S1 is the price, but I'm thinking that won't matter when it comes down to it. The one problem I had with the BK2 is that I didn't realize that when they said 10 3/4" and 1 pound, they meant it. If I could just hold the knives, to evaluate them in person instead of over the internet, it would be so much easier.

6 hour drive north. Shipping wouldn't be difficult, but driving might be.

I was going to tell you that I have a good friend there that has a ton of knife experience and a bunch of Bark River knives. He is an avid outdoors man, hunter and great guy. If you ever make it up there, let me know and I'll give you his number.

I'm sending you a message.

I don't think you would be disappointed with a RatManDu, but if you want smaller, there is the Howling Rat Little Mischief (HRLM). The HRLM just went out of production, so you would need to search the secondary market for a good price.

That said, given your requirements, financial situation, and needing time to do some research, I suggest that you get a Mora knife. They're well regarded as being lightweight and durable, and you can get one for the cost of a large pizza with the works.

Actually, I just watched a video of nutnfancy make a winter shelter, and he puts a couple chips in his CSK when hacking with it. Considering where i live, in the northern part of Wisconsin (by north i mean in the region of Superior, not Wausa!), the winters get kinda chilly, and I don't want a blade doing that to me. never mind.
