Gerber Applegate Combat Folder

golflender, it's a way cool COMBAT folder alrite. But of course, that's exactly why it's that large! So don't expect it to be an EDC; well, not unless you're riding in a Humvee...

However if you should find the discontinued Seki manufactured Ka-Bar Dozier Thorn, (which comes with alloy handles with a D2 blade); it's pretty similar to the Gerber Covert in some ways. But it's some bars higher in terms of overall quality no doubt.

In case you're still considering the Combat Folder, I took a couple of pictures.

For size comparison I used a Kershaw Blur.

I really like the knife, but mine is an older US model. I bought it about 7 or 8 years ago, you can still find them on Ebay. I haven't experienced the quality issues others have and I thoroughly examined it again before taking these pictures. It locks up tight and it will not unlock after a brisk spine whack. It does not have a safety lock.

same here ,,lol,,

by the way I don't want one of these combat folders because I thought I might have to use it on somebody, I just want one cause they look so cool. Probably just put it with the rest of my knives and carry it every now and then.

That's the same reason I bought my knife, plus Rex Applegate was a hero of mine.

I've only carried it once or twice, I just enjoy owning it.

I've carried a black A/F covert close to 10 years now. I rotate it with a BM 9130. The Gerber knife has always been a solid knife for me. Never have figured out why the covert has such a bad reputation.

Looks like these knives are gonna be like potato chips,, I can't get by with just one,, may have to buy all three :)

i have carried my older applegate for almost 13 yrs (same as JPD in his Pic on my LCE .
i originally bought it when i deployed to Bosnia . still looks good and has worn well . i broke the cheap nylon sheath almost right away but later just duct taped it to my gear ..

i liked it cause of its weight but still decent size and alot lighter than carring a k-bar around .

Benchmade 530 is along the same pattern, blade is about an inch and a quarter shorter.

Yes definitely same idea and easier to carry too.

I got to handle one at Gander Mountain, overall it's much thinner and more compact than the Gerber full sized Combat Knife.

It was smaller than I imagined it would be, but still a nice knife.

went to a knife store today, just so happened they had the full size combat and the smaller covert in stock so I got to handle them, (the combat is huge) I really liked both knives , however maybe it was just me. It took both hands to open either of these knives, I thought you could just put your thumb on the stud and flip them open, somebody who has one of these knives enlighten me.

I can open my Combat Folder (the big one) by starting it with my thumb and then flicking my wrist.

I'm sure it was tight, since it was new. I have no problem opening mine. You can also oil the pivot point, if it doesn't go away.

I have a lot of Gerber Knives which are used for hunting big game. I have never has a shadow of a problem with any Gerber knife of any kind and I have about all the brands to compare them to. For my money they are hard to beat. Folders are made for cutting and easy carry, not to use as an ax.

I saw a few on Ebay , both covert and full size model, also noticed a USA made full size model.

And gpknives, com has a full size model on sale for $75.00.

thanks JPD, just checked out gpknives.com, I see the knife on there, has anybody here ever bought anything from them, if I can get one vote of confidence for this place then I'm buying it.
