Gerber Applegate Combat Folder

I had one of the original Gerber Applegate-Fairbairn folders, and found it's quality to be fine. Just too large for EDC. Mine went into a gift package for the sandbox last Christmas, hope it is serving someone well.

Some more pics I had.
Just for the halibut.:D

i like the fixed blade as well ,very sturdy knife ... if you use the large folder much, you will need to find a suitable sheath the original is very poor quality nylon ..

i never understood why they would build a good knife only to have piss poor sheath ..

thanks JPD, just checked out gpknives.com, I see the knife on there, has anybody here ever bought anything from them, if I can get one vote of confidence for this place then I'm buying it.

I've bought about four or five knives from them over the last year and a half, they're very reputable. Good service and fast response to emails.

went to a knife store today, just so happened they had the full size combat and the smaller covert in stock so I got to handle them, (the combat is huge) I really liked both knives , however maybe it was just me. It took both hands to open either of these knives, I thought you could just put your thumb on the stud and flip them open, somebody who has one of these knives enlighten me.

See, told ya it's gona be bigger than you expect. :D Now imagine if you got the SOG, which is even bigger.

Mine took a bit of effort to flip open, but I never bother as push the thumb stud open it just as fast. One thing to note is on this knife you push the thumbstuds straight forward, not any other direction or semi-circle. Do this and it'll open really smooth, better than any of the spyderco and kershaw I've tried.

well jzmtl,,I couldn't decide between the SOG and the Gerber so I just ordered both,,now I'm gonna have 2 knives that are too big to carry instead of one,,,lol

and I probably didn't push the thumbstud correctly.

oh by the way thanks JPD:thumbup:

You're welcome....

SOG makes a good knife too, I have a couple of their knives.

The SOG Tomcat 3.0 is on my list, but other things have been taking priority ( kids college, etc). :)

Well anyway post when you get you knives.

FWIW I got my knives today am very pleased with both of them,,I like the look of the Gerber, but believe it or not the Sog which is a bigger knife carries easier in my pocket. Glad I bought them both. Yes they are not practical every day carry knives but who cares... will post some pics for markksr in a couple of days.

...and if you're looking to get the Gerber covert, then let me know as I have one that has never been used I'd be willing to trade.

I carried one of these Gerber Applegates for a while. The sheath it comes with is kinda cool but the strap will likely break before long — mine did after like eight months. Also, like the guy up the page said, it doesn't take much to get the lock to fail. The lock failed on mine when all I was doing was trying to scrape a sticker off my car with the false edge on the back side of the blade. You're better off with SOG's 5" shark-tooth tipped version .... pretty sure it costs less too but I might be wrong. Hope this helps.
