Oh it's a knife, make no mistake about it. That is exactly what is is marketed and sold as. As far as self defense, a small 2.5 ounce box cutter is not really going to help you much, especially if you have no training to use it. Lots of people like to argue that point, but there are way too many variables for a definitive answer. If you want something for self defense, but yourself a machined Aluminum or Titanium pen, get a small but super bright flashlight or something else. I wouldn't rely on a mediocre mini box cutter to save my life, it's a utility knife and has virtually nothing to hang onto and would probably be as uncomforable as holding a cactus.
