Gerber Fans

That's not saying much. If I was getting paid to have my initials on a knife, I'd take the money and run.

that just means you don't give a whip about your reputation, not saying BG does mind you, but if I had the RC line, I know that ship would be TIGHT!

Like I said I am new to this forum. I can't figure out how to post pictures. I was going to post a picture of the Gerber Tanto. Could someone explain how to do that? I keep seeing post from a URL but I can't get it to work.

Well, sometimes we get to be knife snobs around here.

Gerber and Schrade both have done things to deserve some heat. That doesn't mean that they don't make a knife or two that good quality.

Yeah they make 1 or 2 good knives for every hundred they put out.

Besides using pot metal mystery steel their QC is terrible. Why spend the money on gerber when there are so many knives from reputable companies for the same price?

I used to be a rock solid Gerber guy up until 3 - 4 years ago when I found Esee. however, I still own some of the higher end Gerber knives and tools: LMF II, Yari II, Applegate-Fairbiarn folder and a Gerber Gator sheath knife, Tri-fold Shovel, Mil-Spec Concertina Cutters. I think that the high-end Gerbers are of good quality but the lesser priced knives are a bit of a crap-shoot. I am very pleased with my Gerber Kiowa and have used it for work for the last 6 years. Ive pried tile off the wall, used as a screwdriver, pried paint cans open, punctured metal cans, etc and it's held up very well!

I do have one last Gerber that has been a "dream Knife" since it came out: the Coffin Handled bowie.

Old Gerbers are great. I was gifted a Silver Knight a few months ago and it's riding in my pocket every day. The fit and finish is great with no play. it takes a great edge and keeps it. The ultralight Gerber is pretty good as well, it was gifted to me as well.

New ones? eh... Before I got into knives, I thought that Gerbers were great. Back when I had a hard time to pony up money for a $25 knife. Now I'm carrying Striders, Benchmades, Spydercos, ZTs, and customs. My opinion on Gerber changed when I picked up a Reflex, Evo, and one of the A/O ones with the carabiner attachment? They are not even worth the time spent taking them out of the package. That was about a year ago... When compared to knives offered by Kershaw, it's pretty stiff competition.

I really don't like how Gerber doesn't state their blade steel. I don't like buying mystery steel.

why? I would think that BG would want to keep quality good, after all, it IS his name on the product
Why? Because they are cheap POS knives nothing like the Gerber quality of yore. Nothing to do with quality but everything to do with making a dollar.
Why buy a BG knife, when there are so many quality knives out there.
Further more, this is a knife forum. Hopefully people aspire to more than mere BG knives. No, thats not snobbery - merely a statement of fact.

I have one of those. Its a nice knife...., as well it should be; its not made by Gerber;)

Again (for no particular reason) - I like some older Gerber knives and still occasionally buy the older blades.

Although I don't own a Gerber BG knife and have no desire to, I have to admit that black-orange color scheme looks really good to me. Wish I could get a quality knife like that.

I think if you're not a steel snob Gerbers can be great. I own a Gerber Prodigy and I love it. I don't use it much since it's more of an urban survival knife in my opinion. Due to the serrations and glass breaker it's just not made for the woods. I find it very nice and comfortable. The sheath isn't too bad either. And it's made in the US!

I think a lot of knives like the recent Gerbers and Schrades have their place. They will cut well when sharp and normally sharpen easily so, most people's EDC perposes that might include opening boxes and other mundane tasks they will work fine. Now, if you use it for work or moderate duty use on a regular basis they will require a lot of sharpening and the build quality probably won't hold up.

Is the current production Gator approximately the same quality as those made years ago? That used to be a nice knife for the money. Not the greatest steel but very comfortable, and the non-slip texture was outstanding.

Still, the Silver Knights were the finest knives to ever carry the Gerber name. Excellent quality, made in Japan.

None of the gerber knives are the same quality as they where years ago

You can get a US made Gator in 154CM that is a pretty good knife.

I make knives for myself and few of my friends from HSS stock. This choice comes from that Gerber used to make their finest products out of this type of steel. I still have three production knives with me and two of them are Gerbers, Silverknights from '80s.

Well, if that place is on the top of a dung heap, then yes!:D
The above tongue in cheek of course.
Seriously; Schrade used to make GREAT knives and Im a huge fan of the old Sharpfinger and the old Schrade Woodsman.
But the old Schrade company name was bought and is now used as a front to sell crappy low quality knives.
Schrade knives of today are NOTHING like they once were.

I know there are folks who don't think the quality is the same but I can't complain. My newer Gerber knives sharpen and hold a edge. My folders are solid with no play. I have never had one fail when I have been out hiking, trout fishin, or camping. I keep reading all the concerns about Gerber quality but from my own experience I just don't see the problems people talk about in my own Gerber's. I have a EVO MID Tanto that I carry everyday and it cuts everything I need to cut and is light to carry.
