Gerber going upmarket !!!

Not one comment ? Jeez I guess Gerber are even more unpopular than I thought !!!!

I'm guessing that's a special factory order, rather than a regular production run. It's nice to see Gerber using a good steel again, but you'd have to be on crack to pay $100 for an EZout. The EZout design has some pretty serious flaws- bad clip, cheap-feeling rubber inserts etc. That version doesn't do anything a Wally World Native can do better, at half the cost, IMO.

They had to ruin it with the serrations. As with any knife, heat treat makes or breaks it's ability to perform and they didn't list the hardness of the blade. But, the only experience I have with S30V is my little Buck Hartsook.

Every experience I've ever had with Gerber has indicated that their heat treatment verges on buttery soft.

I actually liked my EZ out that I had a few years ago. It wasn't pretty but I EDC'ed it for over a years mainly at a work knife and it worked great. Since then I have gotten quite snobby with my knife carry (thanks Bladeforums) and never replaced it when the pocketclip gave way.

This design looks interesting but I'm a sucker for sheepsfoot and wharnies so I would bite except for the mall ninja-ish serrations and black coating.

Considering the wide range in performance of S30V from different makers I wouldnt want to be the one to test theirs out, even if their designs were appealing and well built.

I've never bought a Gerber, a friend had one though and the rubber scales started peeling off after a month.

I have two Gerber Gators with 154CM. tough as nails and great steel. The better Gerbers have been very good to me. Their cheap stuff is about as good as anyone's cheap stuff. I never condemn any Brand of Knives, each one is judged only by my personal experience. If I would have shied away from knives or anything else based only on politics or hearsay, I would have missed some good equipment at good prices.:)

It occurs to me that had they put a neat simple and well executed sheepsfoot or wharncliffe on the Gator handle it would have made a good platform for a venture into S30V utility. It's all that poncing around trying to reinvent the wheel in the name of tactiCOOL that is the downfall here. I guess they just have to bring stuff like that to market because that's what the average pleb wants. I prefer simple no frills solutions that work. I just want well executed designs that are fit for purpose not a feeling like I've stuck my head in a bored designer's brainstorming bucket and yanked out something with no advantage to it at all.

I have carried the EZ-Out for about 3-4 years. It has served me pretty well for day to day. If the clip loosens up, I take it off bend it back to shape, and reinstall it. The blade seems to hold an edge pretty well, not what I would describe as buttery soft. I would like to see steel liners, but what do you expect for $29? Now for $99 I would expect a little more...

Sorry Pitdog, I just do not like gerber products. The only thing i like is the Infinity light, and even that i relegate to the FAK for checking pupil size.

Interesting design. I like the blade shape, but not the serrations or the huge logo. I've never been a fan of rubber-gripped knives.

At this price point, I think I'd do better with a Kershaw, Spyderco or Benchmade.

I too am not a big fan of Gerber products.
I've had an EZ Out lock fail and close on my fingers. That knife was never used for more than light paper and household cutting chores and the typical opening/closing in front of the TV. (Was a 1st production run model) Had another of the same - with a very light spine whack test, it too had the lock fail.
In good conscience, I couldn't either sell or give the knives away, so I actually discarded them in the trash.

Just two data points on Gerber knives, but it did sour me against Gerber products...

Actually this Geber is a regular production piece and you can get them for 39.95 at Smoky Mountain. I agree about the serrations ruining the knife but I might get one to use as a work knife just for the heck of it.

In the good ol' days of Pete Gerber,Gerber made some real nice knives. I am not the only one who misses my Gerber Shorty. The little folding Gerber sportsman was an awesome knife and classy in the bargain.

I have one of these and for the money I paid, 29.95 it was a pretty good deal. I like the s30v but I could do without the serration and black coating. In plain edge I think it would be a pretty good all around knife as the shape is very useful. It gets used sometimes for beater jobs.

I like the ordinary EZ Out better than that. Good steel or not, the blade shape is gimmicky, I hate the serrations, and that's way too much money for rubber handles.

Nice try anyway.

I'd rather see them release their popular knife models (EZ Out, Gator, etc.) with inexpensive quality steels - 440C for example.
