Just picked up a Gerber Harsey Ranger today at my local knife shop. I paid an even $50 Canadian, I've seen em at $50+ American on the net. Anyways I know its a Gerber, 'Gerber oh no'...But the quality seems rather good, Aluminum handles, aus8 steel, no blade play and razor sharp. by the way made in Taiwan. What do you guys/gals think?

I thought they wee awesome but then I saw one at the canadian tire that was 440A. I am not a steel snob(I do prefer carbon though) aus8 is fine for a 50$
knife and 440C is one of my picks for underrated steels but 440a is just to crappy. If the cost of the steel is so important use a cheap carbon steel and a blade coating.

here is a pic off thenet...

They look like a decent knife, if you do a little looking on e-bay you can get them for about 20.00 u.s shipped..

My 2¢:

Comfortable in the saber grip, but the texture of the handles is a little slippery and i am concerned that i will slip-up on the blade in any kind of 'tough use' situation. so it's kind of a light duty blade for me. The blade sharpens easily enough and keeps it's edge for long enough for me to be satisfied. Serrations don't help, would have preferred the knife without them. liner-lock is really flimsy and i can get mine to fail by knocking it against a table. So it's a light every day use knife.. but not anything fancy or a knife that i would trust my life to.

also it seems like everyone has copied the design and is making a knockoff of the basic pattern (schrade, S&W)

You're the one with the new knife in your hands. You tell us. What do you think of it?

Give more detail on the fit and finish. Pics would be nice.
Tell us about the lockup. Solid? Spine whack? Easy to open and close?
AUS8 is known for taking a good edge. Have you worked on yours yet?
Have you tried the edge out yet? How well did it cut that cardboard?
How does it fit your hand? tell us about how well you can grip it.
With it in your hand, how do you feel about the amount and placement of the serrations on the partially serrated blade?

You got a new baby. Don't ask us what we think of it. Tell us how great it is! and why. (or hopefully not tell us that the poor thing is sucky and is not worth what you paid for it)

Have not put it to any real use yet, but will take it out in the woods tommorrow while bowhunting...

Awesome. Have a great time and then tell us city-bound folks about it so we can drool.

I've had one for two years it's a very good work knife. Good lock up and keeps an edge well.

I got my first Gerber Harsey Air Ranger about 3 or 4 years ago. It is one of my all time favorite knives. I hate that it is made in Taiwan, but the quality is excellent. The size and shape is perfect. This knife really shows off Harsey's design. The AUS 8 models, to my understanding, were some of the first runs. The newer ones are "400 series stainless." I just got a new one the other day because mine had gotten so dull. If Gerber or any company would make the Harsey Air Ranger with some quality steel I would pay an astronomical price to have it.

i got one back in 03 from home depot. a blue handled one. it was dull as anything, and wouldn't sharpen for sh*t, but i liked the handle shape. cqc7ish. i gave it to pete a while back.

I bought two , one I gave my father for his birthday. I noticed he was carrying it Christmas day , so I asked him how he liked it and he said it was one of his favorites.
IMO the quality is remarkable regardless of where they are made. I thought they were all AUS 8 , but my blade is unmarked so who knows.
They are very similar in quality to the Fred Carter knives marketed by United Cutlery, so if you like the Gerber Harsey , keep an eye out for some UC closeouts( now that they are out of business). One in particular is a Colt M4 K, very well made .....

I think you did alright, The gerber harsey ranger is my EDC, the blade sharpened pretty good, and the whole thing really light.

Ergo seems very nice, ok smooth action, put some slices in some branches and pretty razor sharp and light in the hand.

I think it is probably the finest liner locking knife that has ever been made. You can get them for $15.00 at Smokey Mountain Knife works.

Sounds like you're happy with the purchase. Glad to hear that. And I appreciate hearing what you think of the knife.

How was the bow hunting? Do any good?
