Gerber LMF II put to the test

I have a LMF II. It is very comfortable in the hand, weight is actually nice but might be a little much for packing!! Built solid. I hate the sheath. Makes the knife, as I stated before in another post, feel like it is much bigger knife than it really is. But the sheath to its defense is more versatile and can be worn in many ways. Plus it has a sharpener, which can be nice if you are in a pinch. The weight I think helps this knife perform chopping and baton better or more comparable to a knife with a larger blade, but yet makes it perform I think better to other knives in its blade length category. The protruding tang and pommel on the end can be useful for hammering...something the Becker BK2 doesnt have. I dont care for the Becker handle. Zytel (Grivory) like plastic...strong but no Kraton (LMF doesnt have Kraton but the rubber grip is very comfortable even after long use). As for the Becker steel, I think the 1095 is better on the becker but is less corrosion resistant so it is a trade off. The Gerber isnt a bad knife and it is nice to see it be proven. I would love to see a BK2 test like that one just for comparison.

Do a RC-5...I got rid of the Gerber. I hated doing it but the 420HC isnt as good as the 1095 plus the RC-5 is a thicker blade. The Handle on the RC-5 is so much nicer than the BK2. But the BK is still a great knife!!!

i've got the prodigy and the box came marked as being sandvik steel, so far blade has faired just the same as review above, very much the same as LMFII but smaller!!!!

So would you recommend this to a friend for $70? i need a better all around survival knife than my current KA-BAR, and dont want to spend anything over 100 dollars. 4 1/2in to 7in blade and made in usa. im thinking this gerber LMF2 or a becker BK2. yes you are right 2006 to early 2007 gerber used the 12C27 sandvik steel, because of shortages they switched to 440A in some of 2008, and all after is made of 420 High carbon steel.

BK2, Takes a better edge, can do light chopping, and doesn't have serrations.

Also, you could also make a new thread about it, and not have to resurrect and old one.
