Gerber that bad? Why?

The gerber folders, with the exception of the applegate and emerson colaborations and the hinderer rescue, suck. I have purchased several gerbers in my history of knives, mostly when I was starting out cause I didn't have the money or knowledge that I have now. I ended up returning most of them after opening them up and realizing that I just bought a piece of crap with a point. Now, I recently went on a search for a fixed blade and somehow ended up purchasing a gerber freeman hunter. It is a fairly nice knife and I feel content with using it for my next camping trip, but I'm going to make damn sure I keep my emerson commander close bye! Now, one of the gerbers that I did keep was the Hinderer rescue, actually I kept two of them. It is a nice folder, but it is one of the higher priced gerbers if you are willing to put out the money. But, all in all, if you go for anything $40.00 or more you might as well look for a sog, a nice benchmade or even a spyderco. In fact, if you have 40 bucks, just go to wal-mart and pickup a spyderco native, it has (last time I checked) S30V steel and is a nice knife to start with. Good luck and stay away from the cheap gerbers.

Well, I'm back. The original poster of this thread and now I understand why Gerber sucks. The little mini fast draw I bought in May of this year crapped out for no apparent reason. I was just driving on my way home opening and closing the knife...mindlessly as I did everyday and then poof...it went floppy on me. Doesn't lock or spring open anymore. Blade just flops back and forth. Since this post I've gone on to buy about 10 more knives..none of them Gerber based on what I read here. Mostly SOGs and Kershaws...just bought a Benchmade Mini Griptilian. The Kershaws are awesome. Haven't received the Benchmade yet...the SOGs seem ok too.

Well....see, I am learning.

Hey, good for you. I'm proud of ya, buying into the better brands will benefit you in the long run, as you can see by that mini-fast-draw crapping out after not even a year. The mini-Griptilian will be a great knife, I have the bigger Griptilian, but they both handle the same. If you are going to buy more SOG's try to get a Vulcan, it is an awsome knife and I've edc'd it almost everyday since I bought it about two or three months ago. Good luck shopping and Merry Christmas!

Hey thanks for the tip...always appreciate any recommendations. I checked out the SOG Vulcan...it is a really awesome looking knife! However, at an overall length of almost 8.5 inches...too damn big for me for EDC. I'm a lawyer and the people I deal with would think I'm a step away from snapping and going postal at the firm if they saw me with an 8.5 inch folding knife!!! :eek:I already stick out because I ride a big black Honda VTX1800 (with loud ass bigshot pipes that rattles the whole parking garage...I love to set off every damn alarm on all the BMWs and Mercedes parked there...it is hilarious) to work sometimes and a couple of the other lawyers have seen my bring my Kershaw Scallion to work. They just don't get it and I could never explain IT to them. It's ok...I'm a senior lawyer there so no one says crap to me..they just fear me...fine with me. I'm not kidding.

Oh well....wish I could bring a crocodile dundee bowie knife with a crocodile sheath under my suit....

Well then, you might be happy to know that the Vulcan has a concealed carry clip which allows the knife to be completely hidden with the exception of the clip.

Gerber's quality has gone down hill big time. They used to be good, but no more.

I've got the LMF2 too. Its amazingly sturdy, especially the tip. Gerber still has a lot of knives made in Portland Oregon. The Gerbers I have are made in the US and these are great. Don't know what their cheaper knives are like however

Kershaw is King! (of knives)

Well, almost. They are easily the most improved of any major manufacturer.
I've been more and more pleased with their product.

Now, Thomas W.... what is that top knife back on page 3? Looks like some sci-fi amalgamated tanto.....

I Want It! :)

Respectfully,

Dave
