Asked for some help a couple of weeks ago. Wife is a first responder and she's getting a great work knife (or two). But I'm now in a knife mindset and thinking about valentines day. :)

We went to Germany a couple of years ago. She loved everything about it. She drives a German car and loves everything about it. So I'm thinking about a German knife she can keep in her car. Pretty open to suggestions. It won't get a lot of use but may get some. I don't want something so nice she's unwilling to use it. She has tools in her car so don't really need a multi-tool.

Cost isn't too much of an issue - I'll consider anything. My goal is under $200. I'd have really be convinced she would love this knife as much as her car to go over $300. Not sure she'd be happy carrying a knife that costs so much.

Some criteria:
  • German. Not even considering non-German at this point (Swiss is not close enough)
  • Folder
  • A manual, assist, or auto is fine - but no nail nicks for manual
  • Locking blade - the better the lock the more she'll like it
  • Doesn't need a clip - this will likely be in her glovebox or purse
  • Nothing too "girly" in looks or design (absolutely no offense intended - don't know a more PC way to say this)
  • Special, distinctive, or different in some way
Given all this, I'm considering a bone-handled Boker.

Thanks again for recommendations.

Take a look at Hartkopf knives the make some really nice knives at a good price . Eickhorn are an other German company worth taking a look at :)

Lock ?? I thought that in Germany and most of Europe locking blades make the knife a' combat knife ' and not legal !

No I'm not quite sure where you've got that from . May be not legal to carry but they certainly do make them . And own them :)

They don't.
Auto locking and one hand opening together wouldn't be legal to carry in public. Though possession is no issue.

Only one hand or only auto lock is totally fine to carry on you. One hand opening and manual lock is also fine (think Opinel with thumbstud).

Also I believe the OP is looking for a German made knife and not neccessarily German legal knife. Thus he could get a German made automatic knife which Germans aren't even allowed to own.

Correct. In Oregon. I can carry pretty much anything I would ever want in my pocket, just not concealed. The law here doesn't define concealed. Generally if a clip is visible it's not considered concealed. So most what is recommended here is not a problem where I live.

Mercator knife by Otter Messer, copper handle and carbon blade.

I'll be reviewing it later this week.

Boker Steve Kelly Gulo. It's toward the top end of your price range ($290 from BladeHQ). Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe it's a new release for 2017. Not sure why Knifecenter is listing it as a Boker Plus product; they seem to be making them in Germany (and from what I understand, Boker Plus knives usually come out of Asia). I'm thinking about purchasing one myself.

This.

Same, man. I'm THIS close to picking one up. But I'm gonna get something else first so the funds won't be around for a while. That thing is like my perfect EDC though [emoji52]

Mercator is what I was going to suggest and I see others have already. Seems it meets all criteria except the nailnick though... Still pretty distinctive since its been produced in Germany since the 1860's. Im partial to the brass :)

Also brass should be stronger than copper or did they make the copper from a thicker sheet?

Generally, the mechanical properties of copper are a bit more robust than those of brass. I think it's a bit more machinable and malleable, though that's really not my area of expertise.
