German folding knife for wife... recommendations please

Great recommendations here. The Mercators certainly have that "Germaness" to them, particularly the K55. It's like the VW Bug of pocket knives.

Boker Jen Anso Haddock

N690, 3.4", Anso pattern G10, Ti frame lock
Despite the nail nick, it's deep hollow grind makes thumb opening easy.

Still working this. Tried to pick her brain a little without spoiling the surprise. Pretty sure she'll appreciate the Germaness of the Mercator. Still want to get her something nicer. For a casual knife (non-work) she keeps going toward wood handles. Based on that I'm leaning toward the Arctos in cocobolo or the 3000 in ebony. No stud or flipper for the 3000 is a drawback.

Per BladeHQ some Böker Plus knives are made in Germany. Is this right? The Böker site has this:

"Conception, design and construction are carried out in Solingen, and production takes place in Europe, the USA and Asia."

Seems possible some Plus knifes are made in Germany.

I really don't want to be THAT GUY, but a knife as a present for a girlfriend can often be something that we ourselves are much more excited about than they are, even though they try to be nice about it. It can often be a good thing to think twice about it, unless she's literally begging for one, especially if you're giving her two knives for work already. For $200, are you sure there's no other gift that she'd be much happier about?

I am 100% with you and that is sound advice. But... I'm perfectly fine if she says "no thanks" and I return it. She never feels obligated and I'm not offended if she doesn't like it.

Other husbands/BFs buy their SOs jewelry. I can't imagine why I would ever do that. So I go spend a fortune on something she feels obligated to like? No way. If I want to get her jewelry I'll ask her. They we go to the store and she picks out what she wants. I wait patiently (and quietly) until she asks for my opinion, when I then tell her her "that looks great." And if she wants jewelry she'll usually just go get it anyway.

I like to think of gifts for people they would never get for themselves. I think she will appreciate having a knife in her car. Something unique and German will be different and special. She loves her German car more than me, and she loved visiting Germany. A German knife will be a nice gift if she likes it.

Short story: about a year ago she asked me for some pliers to tighten up a nut on something. She doesn't know sizes, so pliers or a crescent are her go-to. Next gift she got from me was her own Knipex Pliers Wrench. She didn't appreciate it until she used them. (If you don't know what these are and you use tools, go check them out.)

Just chiming in as a German myself but I would not consider böker my first choice, but that is a matter of preference I guess. There are other options which you could consider like pohl force (which are rather tactical) or oberlandsarms knives. It depends on your budget and what you are looking for. As far as traditional, it doesn't get much more traditional than mercator.

I'm all ears! Based on what I just looked at Oberlandarms seem to be too tactical looking. She does tactical all day at work. This is a weekend knife and one in her car. It may seems some outdoor use. It's going to cut more apples than tree branches or rope. A quality knife, German, with a more casual aesthetic. Wish I had the ability to describe it better. Looking at Pohl Force - may be some options there.

EDIT: The Pohl Force knives I'm seeing appear to be made in Italy. Any German made ones?

This is a gift. Budget can be whatever I want. I'd like to stay in the $200-300 US range. Would go higher for the right knife, but doubt I need to.

Well, I wish I could help you more, but regarding knives truly made in Germany you sort running out of options and start moving into custom territory rather quickly I'm afraid.

So basically all your options have been mentioned already...

BTW, not a folder but kind of cool and affordable

AFAIK some of his folders were offered in the custom knife section recently, though they exceed your budget quite a lot.

If I can think of other options I will post it, but so far, most of them have been named.

So I guess back to böker again 😉

Me, personally I would probably go with the trapper or Barlow in damascus.

Chad Nichols damascus and supposedly assembled in Germany. Also probably some of the easier ones to get. Classic design, updated materials.
Can't go wrong with the solo IMHO either, one of the better offerings in recent böker history.

Also just saw that böker offers an upgraded version of the anso 67 with cru wear.

I can vouch for the Boker Haddock. Superb knife, not that common, beautiful Anso functional design.

Boker has been mentioned and was my first thought. I think it was mentioned, is Dietmar Pohl German?

Thanks much for the links and additional info. Nice user name. :)

To answer my own question, no. Based on what I've seen on Boker's site they're made in China, Taiwan, the US, and Italy. US seems to be limited to the Patriot knife. I'll send BladeHQ a note tomorrow about some of them being flagged as German.

Sorry for not mentioning it earlier.
A cool honorary German knife is the German Army Trekker from Victorinox.
Even got a cool eagle on it.
There is also an older version which I had in the German army and which didn't open with one hand. I don't remember any company's logo on it. From the looks of it, the old one could also have been made by the Swiss for the German military.
Cheap and reliable.

I have the Arctos and I love it. I have amassed a very large collection of knives over the years and the Arctos is my favorite of them all. It's a perfect EDC in every aspect. Well. To me it is. She will be extremely happy with this piece and I am thinking you will end up with one as well.
