I don't know if it's just me, but it seems like the German's, especially the older stuff from the 60's and before, has some of the best stag that I've seen Lots of nice popcorn, thick bark. The only stag I've ever seen that compares is the old stuff from Sheffield in it's heyday.

I was tempted to pick up a stag peanut, but Case polishes off too much of the character that makes stag the special stuff it is.

Carl.

I agree on Case. They have some of the worst stag I've seen. Even the stag on the Case/Bose collaborations was often less than stellar.

I don't know where GEC got its stash, but their stuff is good looking. Best in current production knives by far.

A lot of the stag i see is so thick that it looks goofy. The really good stag imo is when it isn't much thicker than bone but still has the fullness of the stag.

it seems the older pocket knives had some thinly cut stag that was just perfectly fitted to the handles. it may be another 1 of those lost arts.

This is an Anton Wingen Siberian Skinner.....The antlers are my Sika heads....good stuff!!!

Here's the only old German stag I have, a Henckels carving set that is 80, maybe 90 years old.

I have two Canal Street's with awesome stag, a Cannitler and a red stag Half Moon Trapper that came today, really nice.

There is something about German stag though, everytime I see a nice stag handle it's more likely than not from Germany. I missed out on a Boker camp knife with beautiful stag once, the chestnut wood scales version I eventually bought are nice, but that stag was all popcorn, hope someone who appreciates it snagged it!

Yeah, too many makers today grind off half of the bark, makes me wonder why they even bother using stag. Here is some of my German stag

Carl, I agree with you, the very very early Sheffield, and early German Stag is so so superior than any I have seen, so stunning.!

Yeah, now that's what I'm talking about. Bark from butt to bolster. If you're going to use stag, then use the stag, don't polish it off so it almost looks like bone with a little rough in the middle.:thumbup::thumb up:

The problem is that stag is so variable in quality. Even the Germans use so-so pieces occasionally.

This one has pretty good figure, but the color is a bit lacking.

At least the scales are well matched. And it's actually starting to look better now that the stag is starting to yellow.

Those are not from the 60s or 70s, they are just a couple of years old. But I really love that stag. Especially the thickness of the stag on the Otter Halfintegral is a real beauti.

Kind regards
